using the iphone as navigation tool means charging it too
that's bad for the lifespan of the battery ( even got the iphone shutting down because it became too hot )
how do you work around that ? using an old one for this purpose with a prepaid simcard ?
or, haven't i found a way to get the navigation n the screen without charging ?

Yes sadly the introduction of satnav functions on phones is at odds with ideal battery useage.

This is why I enjoy having a built in satnav but I much Certainly doesn't help that is for sure, I tend to use the battery up first and then recharge it once almost exhaust.

If you have app connect, turning off the screen on the phone will reduce the effect.

Also calibrating the battery regularly can help, ensuring its all the way flat before recharging etc.

Waze directions are always the quickest or most direct, if it gives you a weird diversion and you ignore it you can be guaranteed you will hit a traffic jam.

I still use my standard data free satnav when Im not in a rush though.

In the past, I have used an iPad for terrain mapping GPS and if the sunlight is shining on it as well it has gone into overheat protection. What I did on the Touareg was add a small pipe connected to the cooling ductwork and brought it up into the top dash cubby and opened it up to allow the cool air to chill the iPad.
If you mount the iPhone in front of the air vent you could cool it that way.

I have recently gone back to a TomTom as it has maps onboard and has the best dynamic traffic and rerouting IMO.

How are you charging the phone?
Plug in usb adapter to one of the 12 volt outlets?
If so, they are of very variable quality. I've found cheap ones can easily overheat the phone.

Battery management on iphones is usually pretty good, i don;t worry too much about them being plugged in for long periods, most people have them plugged in all night to charge.

Replacing an iPhone 7 battery at our local Gadget Shop cost £40 and took 30 mins.
His advice to prolong battery life was only to charge when down to 10% or less and not overnight unless it needs it.

I thought de charging batteries to the hilt wasn’t good for them??

I bought a £60 Garmin sat nav about 8 years ago, its outlasted 4 cars & 4 iPhones...

Lithium batteries don't like being left unused for prolonged periods with 100% charge, best to store them with 60-70%, but for a phone in use it's fine to fully charge.

Ok. Are bus batteries lithium?

No, lead acid leisure batteries with a glass mat / gel construction, which like being kept fully charged. They do tolerate being cycle discharged but don't like being taken below 11.5V for long.
With lithium batteries (like in your phones), going below 2.8V per cell can damage them.

I think Tesla use Lithium Ion, not sure though. Your phones usually use Lithium Polymer (LiPo), which is a generic term for lithium cells using different makeups.
Lightweight Lithium batteries are great for high current, quick discharge / recharge, such as cars, but require care to handle and can be very volatile if not handled correctly. For our leisure use, we need batteries which store charge for long periods with relatively low loads, and don't require so much 'care'.

Yeah you need to charge it to use a phone for satnav. Older iPhones have notorious issues with battery performance that then reduce phone performance in order to compensate for shonky batteries. As WG says having the battery replaced will probably solve all issues. Does depend on the charger type you’re using (keep to the well known brands though they needn’t be Apple). CarPlay head units are designed also to have the phone tethered and powered at all times.

Leaving your iPhone charging overnight won’t degrade the battery any more than charging when it runs low. The battery will degrade anyway over time regardless of your charging methods. I’ve had almost every model of iPhone since the original release day and even Apple told me overnight charging is just the norm. Only on an iPhone 3S did I get a broken battery (and that was after I had replaced it and left it in a drawer, discharged!). Smartphones (decent ones) don’t overcharge. I still use my original iPhone for music sometimes and it’s going strong after 11 years :) (although I can barely connect it to anything!)

If you have it, and don’t use CarPlay because it may wear out your battery because the iPhone is plugged in, you are missing out. I use it all the time for Waze and streaming music, if it wears the battery out then at least I’ve had the benefit of using it. :D

it charges when i plug it ( dashboard upper compartiment) to get the navigation on the screen of the car and to be able to make/receive calls while driving

I'm using an iPhone for navigation since the iPhone 3 (with Navigon) and by now I'm using it with Sygic combined with an Alpine iLX700 audio system (with CarPlay) and I think It is safe to say that there is no real negative effect on the lifespan of your battery. For the health of modern batteries, it is good to keep the electrons running, charging and using the iPhone (or any other device) is just doing that.

Normally my iPhone is plugged in to the usb and sat nav through appconnect is therefore displayed on the dash screen without any battery issues. Can you get appconnect?
But also walked around Brighton yesterday for 5 hours with phone in hand using apple maps as hand held sat nav and no issues with heat or battery. In fact I’m typing this on the same charge and battery indicator is showing 55 to 60% still.

A good thread this, interesting the many different navigation solutions found.
Personally I use iPhone 8 +CarPlay with google maps mostly with the maps preloaded for the uk. If I go abroad I download the maps needed over my home WiFi. I notice very little battery and data used whilst in use.
Using it this way it works very similar to a stand alone sat nav.
When using Waze or Apple maps a data signal is required as these maps require a data signal to access. This is were my phone gets a tad warmer with more battery drain. (But not excessive)
I have just ordered a wireless QI charger that mounts on a car vent. The main reason for this is to eliminate the plugging and unplugging each time I use the camper. I am hoping that when in use the dab radio signal is not affected as experience to date trying a wireless charger in my car completely screws up the dab.

Did you mean minutes? ;)
I bought a genuine Vw use braided charger fro m Vw factory shop in Wolfsburg
Expensive but used constantly for car play nav and radio 2 whilst in Spain and Portugal at 38 Degrees
Sits int cig lighter cubby left on charge constantly and no problems
I phone 6
Obviously use air con

Don't you have to have the phone plugged in to use CarPlay?
