Get the breakdown company to send someone along to take a look/advise. You can specify if you want a VW trained technician or a AA technician - maybe opt for the VW trained one. I find they are well trained and helpful.

If it was not put back on - it may have fallen from where it was placed, and be resting on the top of the bottom engine cover (if you are lucky) :)

Absence of the cap won’t affect the oil distribution within the engine.
I wouldn’t bother phoning VW Assistance as they won’t come out as the vehicle hasn’t broken down.
Have a good look around the engine compartment as it may still be there. It would be unusual when doing an oil change etc to remove the cap from the vehicle.
As suggested, check the engine undertray, or call into the Dealership for a replacement.
Halfords sell replacements.

Yes we’ve had a good look in a desperate attempt to see it but can’t find it - yes I’ve seen Halfords can get one in by Tuesday - im just deliberating now whether to not drive it now until I’ve got a replacement as concerned about damaging the engine - so cross with myself as I must have not put it on properly when I checked it a month ago because I keep an eye on all that mayonnaise sludge

You won’t do any damage. If you want a temporary cap, household duster folded twice to a square and placed on top with a length of string to tie it on.

Easily done. VW assistance may help, give them a call...if they say no you can look at other options :)
