I have recently acquired my 'new' to me California. I was advised that Comfort Insurance has covered many vehicles on the forum so I contacted them as a first port of call: £438 with recovery. I thought that was too much particularly when I have two other vehicles of my own plus my wife's car available. After all, I can only drive one vehicle at a time.
Long story short; I went with Admiral for £220 with extras. All the vehicle is covered. And my wife will be paying £90 less next year than she did this year.
BOOM!

If this is covering it as a motor home, with cover for all the interior, belongings etc whilst you are away from the vehicle then it's an excellent result... Time well spent... Fantastic. :)

My current car is with Admiral and they told me they wouldn't insure a California. The search continues.

Caravan Club does, and they know what it is as well. Not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for.

The Caravan Club comes in way cheaper than LV! I wonder if I can get Caravan Club insurance through Top Cash Back :)

caravan cup came in more than LV for me & don't cover Business use

Hi DavidApp . Thats weird, my cali is insured with Admiral on our multicar policy. They didn't question it when I phoned to change my policy. Did you call them?

Hi, yes, I called them directly to ask for a quote and the guy on the line told me they don't insure them. Maybe I'll try again with another customer care rep.

Does seem a bit weird. There seems to be a few users on here who are insured with them. I do remember being put on hold for ages whilst the chap on the end of the line checked.

We were with Admiral but to our horror we found out that the habitation side of the van was not covered at all, after many phone calls we found out they can cover the vehicle as if it is a Caravelle/penel van. I think this is the case with many 'car' insurers.

You are best to stick with Caravan Club, Comfort etc... who know what a California is, thankfully Admiral released us from the policy with no penalty and we are now with Comfort

Ah ok, I have a beach so maybe that's it and they don't cover full blown SE's. Going to call them tomorrow though and see exactly what they are covering.

We're with LV and it covers business use. It was about £220 ... through the Meerkats

I think Admiral only cover the Beach. Comfort came out well, although on the phone I said "do you need to know about the modifications?" to which the customer care person said "no". I then checked the policy which asks if there have been any modifications to the manufacturers build other than disability modifications (the form said 'N'). Well, there have been Sportline additions. So I now need to go back and make sure it is all covered.

Hard work all this just for a bed on wheels :-D

Yes,It is hard work finding the right insurance for a ' bed on wheels'
When first bought the ' Cali ',,,,
back in July 2013 we went with Comfort £ 225.18 with NCB unprotection, 6000 Miles Limit, £ 200 Excess...
July 2014 went with Stavelyhead £232.07 with Protected NCB, 8000 Miles Limit, £250 Excess...better cover too...
This year with Saga £ 218.74 with Protected NCB, 8000 Miles Limit, £ 200 Excess..
plus Uninsured driver cover,Vandalism cover,Cover in the European Union for an unlimited period.same full Comp cover as in Uk...Phoned there customer services to check as Saga say motorhome and my vehicle reg excepted..Don't get confused with Saga car Insurance, won't except Cali as first found out back in 2013 !!!!
To add, cover is for Me 59, wife 56 years of age no convictions, motor offensives,a No claim Discount entitlement of 68% 7 years..(Saga say up to 70% No Claim Discount )
Postcode for us helps as told low risk, not like other Cities around Uk !
Forgot occupation's, her don't do nought,me try to do as little as possible with my 18 1/2 hrs a week caretaking a tired old Victorian Building !

I eventually spoke to the right person at Admiral and changed to the Cali (collecting tomorrow - woohoo!) for an extra £30. Covers all VW extras (sportline kit, sidebars, alloys) as well as all internals. Everything that is factory fitted is covered. Will look at Comfort in November.

I tried to add the Cali to my Admiral mult-car insurance. The person on the phone got very confused as to whether they covered campervans. Eventually she said that she'd raise an internal query and come back to me the following day.... which was the last I heard from her.

I went with Comfort and found them excellent and cheaper than I was expecting.

Our Cali SE was with Admiral multi car together with our Yeti last year, cost around £280. Couldn't believe it when the renewal came through at £546. The Yeti had gone up £120 as well. I know insurance has gone up generally this year but that's taking the p****.
They eventually got it down to £467 but still over £129 dearer than Lifesure for a better policy.
As with most insurance companies a cheap initial price to hook you in. Definitely need to shop around each year.

Yes, I too have a multi car policy with Admiral. Their renewal quote this year was sky high (hundreds more) but after mentioning a couple of competitive quotes from other companies, their price miraculously fell like a stone. I could have got it even cheaper by changing companies but by that time I had lost the will to live.

With insurance details being held nationally, surely it should be possible in this day and age to get a renewal quote without re-telling your whole life story each time you phone up a different company? I suppose they have to do it but it is so ruddy tedious.
