No one finds the problem :-(

Hi there.

I'm having the weirdest problem with my baby.
No mechanic can find the problem so now I'm hoping for You guys and girls.

My rear right wheel started to make a kind of tinnitus/hissing sound and the wheel got really hot. Then the mechanic changed some tubes...I'm guessing for the brakefluid...and the sound, kind of dissappeared. Problem is that my wheel still gets very warm. It's not the handbrake, the caliper has been changed and they say it's not the bearings...the wheel doesn't get really hot any more, but still warm :help

I don't know what to do.

Just a thought, is it a 4Motion?
If so it could be a faulty CV joint which is producing the heat which is then spreading through the hub/wheel assembly.
If not, I would be tempted to get it round to an MOT tester and get it on the rollers. They should be able to check that a brake is definitely not binding.

A decent dealer should be able to check the actually temperatures and tell you if it's a problem or not; obviously the brakes do get warm when used.

Could be a warped/worn disk or binding caliper as mentioned.

Call in to your local fire station and askbkindly if they'll look at it with an infra red camera. You may get an idea what is getting warm..

How warm is it compared to the other wheels?

There is a big difference comparing the other wheels to the rear right.
we've got a couple degrees minus now and the other wheels are cold when i park the car, while the warm one is warm but not burning warm. A hint of burnt/hot metal?

This surely sucks, but thank You for the ideas. I'm taking her to the mechanic asking them about the stuff You guys have been guessing about.

But, still...give me more ideas, if there are some...

Handbrake sticking on that side? Could be the cable at fault maybe?

Cheers

No, they've checked the handbrake as well...any other ideas?

:sad

For just 1 wheel to be hotter than the others something is rubbing to produce the heat.
Suspects are:
1. Disc pads either due to the handbrake/caliper
2. Wheel bearings
3. Wheel not running true
4. Something else rubbing onto the wheel or disc?

If nothing obvious is apparent then I would suggest going for a long drive.
Jack up and remove wheel.
Use an infra-red thermometer to scan all the above areas to pinpoint a hot spot, and then examine that area in detail.

Just a thought the tyre pressures are OK? The wheel is running true - try swapping wheel to other side!

Best of luck in your investigation.

When and where was this, if I may?
We are going to Loch Ness in early January, do you think there is a chance to see it there?
Great image btw,

Try swapping over the rear wheels side to side. If the same side still gets hot then you know its not wheel related.

Check this site for NL forecasts. Usually pretty accurate.

and this for text alerts

Tips here on photography, we have found that a digital camera is far more sensitive than the naked eye, sometimes a very faint blur turns out quite well.

Be sure to get the monster in the foreground ;) ;) good luck

Hello Briwy
Thank you for the extremely useful information.
I will surely negotiate with The Monster, mentioning your name, if he is resistant to stay in the righ part of the picture composition. :bananadance
