Hi team,

Wondering if anyone could assist with an issue I have. Chances are it's fine - but I am a bit of a worrier.

The van is little noisy on tick over - it doesn't do it all the time but no connection to it being hot or cold. If I press the clutch down - it goes quieter or goes completely. I've also noted a noise between gear changes, just a little bit of 'chatter'. Don't know how to describe it.

I'm not very good with mechanics so i don't have a clue

Any advice would be hugely appreciated,

Sound like the clutch release bearing might be worn out.

Is this going to be expensive do you think ?

Probably unfortunately. The gearbox will need to be removed and the clutch and bearing replaced, so it’s a fair amount of labour and some parts. If it is the bearing it’s a common problem and VW or an independent should be able to give you a price quickly. Hopefully it’s only the bearing.

Yes. Cheaper with an Independent VW specialist, but you do get a 2 yr Warranty of Parts and work if a VW Dealership do it.

Also, you should consider not just replacing the one part that has failed otherwise you might be back in the same position after a short time with the other parts failing.. It's the Labour that varies rather than the parts, providing you fit Genuine VW parts. Once one part fails there is a high chance the others will follow.

How many miles? Year? what sort of trips?

While its out do the clutch, weigh up what WelshGas said. Or just put up with the noise until it fails. But the danger there is it does more damage to other non effected components.

Possibly the Dual mass, or the input shaft bearing in the gearbox,
When your foot is off the clutch the input shaft is rotating at engine speed, when you put the clutch pedal down the shaft stops rotating, Virtually impossible to guess your fault without listening/driving,
When you drive in 1st gear at idle and then go on and off the throttle a little is there any abnormal clonking,
Are there any gearbox oil leaks and what’s the gear oil level like,
Will the forum allow you to post a small video file,
Very difficult to just guess.

VW may have a technical bulletin regarding your complaint, (it’s worth asking)

Mileage 55k. 2014. It's not my daily driver but I have only had for 2 months ish.

I'll try and get it booked in with VW to get a price. I took it into Lancashire Van Centre for the brakes to be done. They were great to be honest so I'll try them first mi think.

Private sale?

Clutch release bearing noise is usually the opposite way around: ie noisy when foot on the clutch / quiet when off. It could be the gearbox input shaft bearing as the symptom is characteristic of that.

The noise you are getting will be your dual mass flywheel starting to ware out. The noise will get progressively worse. The flywheel will need replacement.

Thanks everyone. I've got the van booked in - will update this thread for future googlers

If it’s the DMF I would get a price from your local Mr Clutch centre. I had one go on an Audi and on a Passat years ago and no one could get near to them on price. As others have said it may be worth swapping out the clutch whilst it’s apart - however that is not high mileage (a commercial vehicle could be doing 50k miles per annum).

Have to agree with above otherwise your going to get taken for a ride Go to an independant - a decent one. Main thing is make sure quality parts are use like genuine Luk.

UPDATE : Clutch and Flywheel need replacing. Told the Flywheel 'might' be OK - but if taking it apart suggested doing the both of them. I'm happy with what I've been told. Replacing with Luk part. £700 ish.

Oh well - needs to be done. Hate for it to go whilst on an adventure somewhere with the family in tow.

Best to get it done. I've had seven VW group vehicles with DMFs only had troble with one which went bang big time and took the gearbox out with it.
All the the others did around 130 - 150k without being touched. Apparently trickling along at idle in low speed was a cause which caused lot of taxis to have problems. Not just VW but Ford had problems as well when they were first introduced.
