Thanks Kenm. We are on Shetland for a while, it's as we return to Orkney (23:00) from Shetland on the late ferry that we have no site to stay at, hence wishing to know where there are any good wild sites to consider. The Council camp site at Birsey is worth staying at and not too expensive. Make sure you also visit Hoy. There are no campsites and wild camping is tolerated. Check out the car park with public toilets at Rackwick. I am sure you will enjoy Orkney but having got that far north why not explore Shetland. It takes adventure to the next level and there is much more scope for camping on remote beaches and community run harbour sites.
We had that problem however we ended up changing our ferry booking and stayed on board the ferry to Aberdeen. I am sure you will be able to find somewhere suitable in Kirkwall or head down the A964 towards Orphir Round Kirk. Thanks Kenm.
