Portmeirion is a folly tourist village built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975, in Gwynedd, North Wales. It lies on the estuary of the river Dwyryd and was the filming location for the 1960’s tv show ‘The Prisoner’ (I am not a number, I am a free man). The design is based on the style of the Italian fishing village of Portofino. This unique venture also became the inspiration for Sir Clough Williams-Ellis’s daughter, Susan, to start the Stoke-On-Trent based pottery company of the same name, Portmeirion.
So, brief history lesson over, we wanted to give the new Campervan / Motorhome camp facilities that are on site. There are 23 pitches, varying in size, and all are serviced with electric hook up, tv hook up and drinking water. There is a drive over grey waste siposal, Elsan point, dish washing room, wireless broadband, and fabulous clean, heated and modern shower facilities.
At first look, the price point of between £55 and £75 appears pricey, but given the limited space, the excellent facilities and the fact that the price includes unlimited access to the village whilst there - both during opening hours and also out of hours - we found it good value. There are a few shops and eateries in the park during opening hours. Out of hours, it’s brill to enjoy the park free of people, and as it darkens it is lit and looks wonderful.
There are a lot of great places to visit in the surrounding area, Snowdon, Caernarfon, Anglesey to name but a mere few. So if you are venturing to North Wales, I would say give Portmeirion a go. It’s an interesting concept, and well worth a visit. Happy travels.
