What’s your views about the power cuts in South Europe?
If you have a campervan / motorhome with solar and LiPo battery’s & a few gas bottles, are you classed as a prepper or maybe just the Boy Scout be prepared is actually a good thing?
The more I think about Gov and dealing with backup of power stations and energy, isn’t self sufficiency the way to go ?
Yes I know about the zombie apocalypse as I watch the last of us, but petrol stations tank lids can be removed & siphoned and a petrol vehicle would be able to journey to the coast to get on a boat as the zombies can’t swim ? (tl:dr ;)

Zombies cannot swim ?
Is that cause of the draggy slow legs ? :D

Serious side though - talk of cyber attacks 10/15yrs ago saying that the struggles of war was going to be more in IT. Disabling countries. Financially or with Power. Look at Heathrow with their power outage. Now with two countries being targeted (not that we will know what the actual cause was).
I know i would rather be out there self dependant in my camper :cheers

I'm down in Spain at the moment, have solar, and if someone hadn't told me I would not have known about the outage. Helps that I was parked up on the day, it was bright and sunny, and I did not have to refuel or go to the super market.

The UK energy infrastructure network isn't particularly resilient at the moment even without bad actors / cyber attacks (privatisation, asset stripping & underinvestment, but that's a whole different thread). Recent storm damage has shown that we need to be prepared for outages due to downed power lines or other physical breakages. Realistically, everyone should have a camping stove, gas bottles, candles/torches and battery pack at the ready as a minimum whether or not they have a campervan. I think more people maintain a larder now after Brexit/COVID shortages also. Now we just need to consider how many extra 907s to buy...
(On that note expect sone copycat panic buying in a few weeks when empty shelves start appearing in America).

And we are only at the start of the EV and AI revolutions both of which will put huge demands on energy infrastructure

Every day’s a school day isn’t it - Zombies can’t swim. Obvious really when you think about it. How big a moat? Now that’s the real question

Well I’m in Spain and the lights stayed on in my Cali

I have lived through major, sustained power cuts in South Africa. During these times you need access to coal/ oil/ gas/ petrol.

A California obviously offers gas cooking, battery lighting, heating, a fridge and recharging via diesel.

If you'd rather stay in your house, a 2.2kw honda petrol powered generator is enough to power your home for many days if you think it through properly.

As we live in a village, I originally bought the older 2kw model to give my homeworker wife back up electricity about 12 years ago as these things can be used on routers, computers etc

Do not use cheapo generators with electronic equipment!!!!

Honda is the market leader and you often see these generators used on market stalls.

If you have gas, coal or oil central heating you could rewire it to run off a 13a socket as opposed to a fused spur - so can readily move to generator power. The timer/ pump/ three way valve all operate off a single 240v wire and will consume below 200w or so. This then maintains your hot water and heating.

Using appropriate extension cables, the Honda will also simultaneously look after your fridge, freezer, TV, media etc

For fuel, if you are lucky enough to have a petrol car - voila. Siphon as necessary. Or have fuel cans

£1,100 quid for peace of mind plus a highly reliable and portable independent 240v electricity supply seems a no brainer to me.
