Hi all,

I want to get a reversing camera installed on my 2019 Ocean. My local auto electrician said I'd be better going to somewhere specialising in campervan work. I'm in Cumbria but have struggled to get responses from places yet so does anyone have any recommendations in the NW or NE regions.

I'm looking for one that can be integrated into the existing head unit. Normally I'd give it a go myself but currently nursing a knee injury so not as able bodied as I'd need to be do it.

Thanks
Mark

Treat yourself to a road angel halo view dash cam. Brilliant bit of kit. And now price reduced if I’m not mistaken. Very easy to fit even with one leg. (Hard wire it) you will not only benefit from an excellent reverse camera you will also have evidence of any bumps and dings you may experience front and rear.

Whereabouts in Cumbria? We used a mobile company from Manchester to come to Wigton to install a reversing camera on a mercedes, I had a specialist VAG retrofit (down south) install front and rear VW parking sensors and reversing camera on a California beach, company near Nuneaton, nice campsite close by

Thanks for the suggestion.
Where would be the best place to mount the rear camera then?

I'm in Penrith.
It might be an option to arrange something further afield and combine it with a few days away. Which VAG specialist did you use?

We had reverse camera, front & rear sensors fitted to our Joker. Total cost £500incl fitting (camera was £200, sensors £150 each end). Reverse cam & kenwood dash cam come up on the VW head unit.

Installation was arranged by the motorhome dealership that we purchased the van from. They used a mobile third party fitter.

So it’s worth contacting motorhome dealers as they will most likely know a professional fitter that can install at a competitive price and will be able to wire/code to the existing canbus.

I had looked at a wireless option but the ones that are more cylindrical and mount above the number plate. I am trying to avoid having a stand alone screen though

We just bought a AUTO-VOX Solar Powered Wireless Reversing Camera Kit, for our T4 California Exclusive. Very impressive so far. Cost about £80 on eBay from the Autovox direct. Ignore the fact the lines and pointing upwards, this is testing it. The camera hasn’t been fitted to the number plate, nor has the screen been added to the windscreen either.

Does the Halo camera display the front / rear image on the VW Head unit?

OEM VW camera fits in next to handle above reg plate. You could try empirical in car technology in Glasgow, they fitted a camera to my daughter's Berlingo, or retrofits at higham on the hill

A few images of my dash cam/reversing camera.
So a front and rear view on screen and both recorded where i hard wired it and when i mounted the rear camera.you can also move the picture around when touching the rear view mirror screen i have it showing up the road but i can change the view to say the ground behind the van with a swipe of the finger. Personally i thing its great easy to fit and now the price has been reduced as well.

Thanks, that very helpful. How well does it work as a reversing camera in that location. Does it see any of the bumper?

So your automatic dimming mirror isn't anymore
I didnt realise that the original mirror was auto dimming. i dont need that function anymore even if it did the dash cam that clips on the original mirror is anti glare.Another thing i like about the Halo view dash cam you have an unrestricted view out the back no overhead locker or headrest blocking the view.

No Not on the head set.It displays on a screen that fits over the original rear view mirror.i will send pictures of everything over the weekend..

For £150…I might get one to just use a rear view mirror on the Joker (as the shower etc block the view out the back).

We already have a parking camera & kenwood dash cam (also warns if you are driving too close, drifting out of lane) that come up on the head unit, so would leave these in place.

I bought this wireless camera on eBay: https://www.ebay.de/itm/353594806421
I connected it to the reverse light for power and the receiver to the head unit (I swapped the original basic VW no-screen unit with Alpine ILX-705D, but I think it will work with VW if it has screen.).
