Reversing camera

Hi All,

The factory fitted reversing camera on our 2014 SE (recently purchased) has suddenly stopped working, have been opening/closing tailgate a lot as our first trip away since purchase. Selecting reverse gear now simply shows the parking sensor display where it was the video display previously.

Contacted seller and they said they had an issue around a year ago but 'wiggling' the wires inside the rubber hose top left of the tailgate resolved it. Doesn't sound like a great solution but I obviously tried it, to no avail.

Anyone with similar issues before I have to take it into VW?

It might be worth wiggling the wires to see if you can get a picture. At least that will identify/confirm that there's a dodgy wire. If there is you could carefully cut the rubber sleeve and repair the cable, if you can identify it.
I assume the camera will function with the rear door open, so if there's 2 of you one could wiggle whilst one watches the screen.

Thanks, good idea. Unfortunately not playing ball. I can’t imagine it’s going to be a cheap fix so probably just have to live without it.

Some years ago I had a problem with the rear wiper on an estate car. I carefully pulled the flexible outer cover out from the body, a grommet type fitting, plus the tailgate end as well. I was then able to get access to the wiring and after finding a broken wire which I repaired, merely had to get both grommet ends back in. Easier said than done.

No cut flexi sleeve or visible damage remaining.

Just confirm your reverse lights are working. Camera is activated via 12v from reverse lights.

Hi, have you resolved the problem. My reversing camera has also stopped working, its stilled covered by warranty but I wondered if there was a simply solution. Everything else works, reversing lights and Park Pilot.

Hi, unfortunately not. I did find it appears not to be a factory fit camera, and taking all the panels off to investigate looks like a nightmare so going to live without it. Just take yours back to VW if still in warranty. If anyone knows of rear camera Cali specialists in or around Cumbria please let me know.

The fact that the previous owner mentioned a problem with the wires in the tailgate gator, it might be worth pulling the gator out at one end and compressing it and examine the wires. Could be an easy fix. You never know.

If you don’t feel upto it a “good” Autoelectrician should be able to sort you out.
