Can the reversing camera be switched on while driving to and looking backwards?

In theory yes but activated by the selection of reverse gear meaning that to do it would be very detailed with changes to the programming needed.

it would probably be much simpler to use a rear view camera with dedicated display.

There was a big discussion some time ago on the subject which a search should find (eventually).

We have the same problem, not on a G C but on our Hymer PVC.
Camera switches off at 15mph, according to Mercedes its a safety issue and can not be overridden.
Only solution is to have an independent system fitted

I have bought a 360 degree 'birds eye' camera system for my cali that I aim to install this year. It will run totally independent of the existing rear view camera. Providing a selectable display...single camera (front/rear/rh/lh or combined) to an independent display.

Ask Absolut5 they will know what’s best

I was rather surprised a couple of days ago that my reversing camera was on whilst driving forwards.
I had selected reverse to get out from where I was parked, but didn’t move backwards as the car in front pulled away so I was able to move forwards instead. The camera stayed on.
I was a bit surprised and switched to NAVigation so didn’t see if it would have automatically switched off at higher speed.
One of several things that seems odd with the T6.1 unit in my experience.

There is a time/speed delay. Speed about 10kph.

I don’t think it should be on at all when driving forward?
If you are shuffling backwards and forwards into a space, very useful.

Sound right to me, rear view stays on for a short while after selecting drive when reverse has previously been selected.

I drove forward around 15m . Got out and shut the gates. Got back in and drove another 30m to next gate and it was still on. If it happens again I will leave it on and see at when it stops.

No shuffling. Only forward motion. But yes, I agree, could be very useful in your scenario.

@Alan Andrews , which camera system have you purchased? any links? I am also looking for one and also in touch with Advanced In Car Technologies (https://www.advanced-incar.co.uk/ ) in Poole to see if there is anything that is suited for the California.

Is off ebay. Generic but comprehensive and in a dry test performed well.

I also needed to buy calibration mats and a 5" tft screen. It might integrate in to the vw display but as yet untested.
