Has anyone had problems with their sat nav getting totally lost or going into meltdown mode?

Ours sometimes wanders off into fields or suddenly tells you to turn right on a motorway! It has also told us in the past to turn right when there is no junction, turn left, and do a u-turn in quick succession at the most inappropriate places.

The unit has already been changed under warranty by the previous owner who had a similar problem. He also found it difficult to report because it only happens randomly and the dealer has to see it malfunctioning to authorise replacement. I am thinking of trying to take a video of it when it is having one of its hissy fits but that’s difficult if I am on my own.

There are no postings on the site about anyone having similar problems, but I can’t believe I have the privilege of being the first owner to suffer this.

Maybe there is a way to re-boot it – feedback asap because it is going in for a service and I would like to report it at the same time because it is totally unreliable.

:thanks

Sounds like the problems we had last year - faulty signal. Though it was showing this maverick behaviour more often than not.
VW quickly solved the problem (under warranty). They told me they had to replace the GPS-unit. No problems since.

It may need a firmware update, or failing that it could well be down to an iffy GPS antenna.

The dealers should be able to get into the hidden menu to check number of satellites seen by the unit.

How can you "update" the gps? I have a rns 510 it came with a cd (via michelin)that was installed on the harddisk , how do you get an update.
Does the 510 run other gps systems like tomtom , say if i erase the michelin and install tomtom ?
I personely find that the gps , michelin , is not so handy than my portebal gps , tomtom.
Bit offtopic , but i also find myself driving offroad in some occasions ....

The RNS510 as standard runs VWs own sat nav software not Michelin. No you can not load any other sat nav software on the unit, unless you are VERY good at hacking.

Never found a problem driving off road with mine, does sometimes put me where I am not. This is due to a poor satilite fix.

It is possible to get firmware update cds to update the system yourself. Or talk to your dealer about it's accuracy & ask if there is a f/w update for it.

Andy, it is indeed a original vw navigation disk , but it has ...via michelin ...on the back ..
Askt already the dealer , says buy new disk (offcorse ! )
Just wonderd if anything cheaper is availyble

Mine dows the off road thing - normally when you are 2 miles from the destination. If you plug into vcds it reports a short on the gps aerial. Mine is a retrofit so simple to replace the aeriel when I get a minute.

You can ask a VW dealer to do the firmware update and there may be a labour charge. You can also order the firmware update disk and do it yourself.

Search on Google for Regensburg syndrome, that was an issue caused by firmware.

You cannot update GPS, I was referring to a failing GPS antenna.

The mapping is Navteq, Via Michelin disk is likely from the previous Nav system.
