Rust in Roof Drainage Channel / Roof Corrosion Recall

Hi All, We have just received a full bill of health on our 2015 T5 Beach from VW Breeze in Portsmouth following the roof recall. However I have noticed a small bit of rust around the rear roof drainage point beneath the tail gate at the bank of the awning. See image below. Has anybody else experienced this? Should this be covered by any VW roof warranty check?

Also on a separate issue there appears to be some broken plastic grommets that holds the roof liner to the ground floor ceiling beneath the pop up bed. Would VW have removed these as part of the roof check as I have only just discovered following a weekend camping trip? The roof liner is hanging off a bit now and needs sorting.

Any advice welcomed.

The area will have to be treated with some form of Rust preventer.. If left to its own devices it will only get worst..Probably a good idea to check with VW to see if its covered by them if not it will have to be sorted by someone ASAP...
 
Not much to fix what you can see on the outside around the grommet. Bit of a problem treating the inside. I think you need to hope for some goodwill from your dealer, as this is probably only covered by the 3 year paintwork warranty

There is a difference between paint imperfections and rust...If this isn’t treated properly and soon it can only spread and eventually the bodywork will rot and then real problems..You must take it in ASAP to get it looked at..The paint warranty may be 3 years but for rust penetration it’s much longer.

Just as an update, our local VW dealer has recorded this, taken photos and sent to VW central for analysis. Will report when we hear back in 4 weeks.

Update on roof drainage. We have waited for over 3 months for a response. VW breeze said it would just be 4 weeks. Very poor service. They have concluded that the rust is not related to the roof corrosion recall and it is not covered. They have not offered any solutions. Not sure where to go next. Very frustrated. Any suggestions welcomed.
 
That rust is not covered by the ROOF corrosion, as this is not part of the (added on) roof.
This should be covered by the bodywork rust warranty. For commercial vehicles, I suppose it's about 6 years, in opposite to 12 years for 'normal' cars.

As for the broken plastic parts, they break when opening and lowering the roof bed. I have some broken too, but have never got into replacing them yet. It's about € 0.65 per piece, which doesn't seem much, but I think is too much for what it is.
I will have them replaced once, but I don't know when yet. The ones that are broken, are only broken for about 7 to 8 years now, so they can stay broken for a couple of years to come, I would think.
They don't need to be taken out for roof corrosion check.
 
I've had four of those clips break in the last 2 years since I've owned the van (the first four years it was a dealer demo vehicle, still had the plastic wrapping on the upstairs bed, so I doubt it had ever been used). I would replace them, but they are so cheap and flimsy I'm sure they would break again. I'm looking for a better solution, since I don't like the roof liner hanging down on one side. Anyone have a better solution?

That's not great on a 5 year old vehicle.

There is a 12yr anti perforation. / Corrosion warranty on all new vehicles. You would have to claim under this. Nothing to do with the Roof Galvanic Corrosion warranty.
Check the Handbooks for details.

I haven’t checked the handbook but spoke with the dealer today. He said that because the corrosion has been caused externally that I’m only covered for 3 years. I don’t see how this would be the case if it’s hidden behind the tailgate and it obviously something to do with the drainage. Not sure how I challenge. The dealer has told me they don’t deal with bodywork and have suggested a local body shop. Not good. Apparently he’s never seen this before.

Did you buy it from new?
Ask them what would have caused it, if they say it's externally.

Yours is the first mention of such corrosion I've seen posted on this Forum. I don't see how this could be classified as external. You could try a different Dealership or get a report/Quote from a bodyshop relating to cause and cost of repair and then contact VW UK customer service.

VW breeze took photos and sent to VW UK who came back with reasons. Going to email them and ask for reason in writing and go from there. I bought second hand.
 
I think you should get an independent report and go back to Volkswagen.
Looks like moisture is getting in under the paint from the drainage channel.

However.
Possibly cheaper and less headache to get a decent local body shop to sort. A few hundred pounds and you can put the issue to bed, instead of being dragged through the Volkswagen process which will no doubt go on for months.
It will be a headache, stressful and total frustration you will save yourself...
 
Hi can I ask if you ever had any joy from VW regarding the corrosion ? I’ve just noticed exactly the same on my 2012 cali. This is clearly an issue from it not being sealed correctly at manufacture. C853BF5B-B571-4C56-8CD1-6C525490D223.jpeg
 
2012!, I think you would be extremely lucky to get any manufacturer to address a small issue like yours at that age. Time for a little DIY me thinks

So what’s the use of a 12 corrosion warranty. I will try my luck with VW. Although in not adverse to dropping a few hundred beer tokens to a body shop to sort its finding one you can trust. Does any know if the tube that connects from this to the drain hole the other side…….under the pop up roof comes off if I remove this bung ? Im concerned if I pop it out to investigate the connecting tube will pull off the rest of it and there will be no way to reconnect without removed wardrobes, trim etc etc etc to access
 
It would be covered under the 3 year paintwork warranty, not the 12 year bodywork, through corrosion warranty. The extension of the paintwork warranty from 3 to 6 years was for the aluminium front box panel, and the aluminium portion of the elevating roof.

Rust is corrosion.

In those pictures it looks like the grommet could be pulled out & as its in a none visible area I would lightly sand it to get rid of the flaky stuff, treat with a bit of corrosion inhibiter & use a spray can on it.

A half decent bodyshop should do that for a few £100, far better than risking VW touching it.
 
Hi ya. VW denied any warranty as they reckon a foreign object had got in. Not sure how. Found a good local bodywork specialist who put in some marine rust inhibitor. Seemed to have worked thus far. Poor show from vw.
