So how do you all find your campervan site and how do you plan?

We are planning a trip to France next month, I searched on here for France trips, campsites in France, sites near calais etc etc, some people have documented there trip stop by so for each place that looked nice I added a saved place on Google maps.

I have search for a sites too, its great it clearly shows lots and lots of sites available in France where I have been looking, we are going to drive to the general area and then find a site on spec using the app and others recommendations on here. Generally the reviews are accurate on this app.

There are lots of aires in France available but most do not have toilets, we are dont have a toilet on board so need to check this facility exists if in an aire style place.

We havent booked any sites yet for our trip, may book popular areas like I'll de Rae for example but other than that we are ready to be spontaneous !

Join ACSI scheme, plenty of sites in France, no problem for most in June just turning up, majority under 20 euro a night including hookup etc, mix and match with aires as you like.

You download the App, that is free, then you select which Countries/ Group of countries you want and download the data. This is about £2.99 for each download and lasts for a year.

The app from ACSI comes "for free" with the book of your choice (Europe, France, ...) but then you only get the maps for free of the country (countries) you purchased the book.
You can buy extra countries for € 1,99? I guess. Or go online to their full website and have full access to all their campings.

As for the original question: planning? When I get a direction I want to go to, I look for ACSI campings or if non in the neighbourhood, I look at Google, but the day of departure I don't know if I am going to end where I was "planned" to go to. I might as well end up somewhere completely else, depending on weather, place, interesting things to see.
Also usefull is a Michelin map (book) of the country you want to go to. There are cities marked with stars *. The more stars, the more interesting to visit. Black triangles show you places of curiosities. 3 dots mean ruines, ...

And with a California, you always have your hotel with you, so choose a direction, get in, drive, ......

Even god doesn't know where you are going to end.

What's the difference between the Camping card ASCI app (which clearly needs a login to access) and the ASCI campsites Europe app (which appears to login free but where you just download regions for a fee). Basically, which one is being talked about here?

FWIW I just use Google Maps to search in area, but I'm not interested in laybys or Aires for practical reasons. These generally don't appear in Google though I imagine they do in specialist apps.

Planning to do a our first main tour starting from Barcelona and then up throuh France next year (approx month), so looking for some tips.

How do you all find your sites. I type in campsites in google maps, but that's very hit and miss, I have found eurocamp independent, but that seems very expensive. we are quite happy with smaller/ cheaper sites.

Any recommendations to websites for campsites would be greatly appreciated :)

Also, do you pre book sites when going on an adventure (planning to stay no more than 3 nights in one spot) or do you just book them as you go incase you love somewhere and want to stay longer or even hate somewhere and want to move on?
Hi, we live in France and I have a fantastic app, it’s Campercontact look at the free version but it’s only a few euros/pounds to upgrade. It lists all campsites as well as free locations as well, also gives information like phone number, opening times, local amenities and maps. It’s good for all of Europe so you’re not wasting any money. Good luck

The CampingCard app downloads the entire campsite database (of the countries you have selected) to your mobile device so it works offline. The CampingCard website accesses information from the web. This makes the app much slicker to use when travelling.

Thanks, I have my ASCI book and app updated now the code was delivered with the book.

Do ASCI rates only apply if you just turn up to the site or can you get them by booking ahead?

Thanks again

I don't know. I have never booked. I always go and see what comes across my path.
Maybe if you call or email, they will answer how to get the discount.

But the rates only apply to campsites that use the CC (camping card). Noticable at the blue price tag in the book. All the others just accept the card as an ID.

I'm just doing a spring clean of all the Apps on my phone that I've accumulated over time and had a go with.

Archies
Campercontact
Camper Stop
park4night
SiteSeeker
Stellplatz

And sitting in limbo with expired subscriptions:

ACSI
Camping Card
Camperstop
searchforsites
Wild Camping

Do you have any particular favourites and must haves? Any you would delete based on your experience? I've tended to use Archies, Stellplatz and the ACSI books more often than not.

Depending on the way you like to travel, BritStop comes in handy for overnighting at British pubs. Officially a consumption is not required, but strongly appreciated.
For France there’s France Passion, members overnight for free with their camper at farms, vineyards etc. A loo is important to carry, as most FP farms don’t provide toilets.

Regards from Amsterdam,

Marc.

I keep buying an ACSI book for France every year. It comes with the camping card so in low season you can have some nice reductions, sometimes even in high season, but they won't display it as they are not allowed to give the reduction price in high season from ACSI.
Sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you are not.

I just use Archies and ASCI on an iPad. I also have all their sites on my SatNav.

We only ever book the Ferry there and back, use Google maps and camp 4 night. Get a good weather app and follow the good weather and be flexible.

Pincamp.de, camping.info, adac app, google. ATM we are looking to find a wine and camp guide...and not just in France

I'm off to Glasgow on Friday. Taking a week off to go there and back.

First night is my Sisters in Cheshire.
Second is somewhere within an hour of University of Glasgow, will fill in the details when I leave Cheshire.
Third, leaving Glasgow, is somewhere near Penrith, will fill in the details on the way.
Fourth is across to Scotch corner, and a visit to Darlington, where I'm going to stay? No idea yet.
Fifth is Ashridge farm in Herts, need to pop in to Duxford, blown off hangar roof permitting.
Sixth is anywhere near Southampton, no idea yet, will decide when at Duxford.

I appreciate that with children you cannot be so free and easy but the above is typically my life with a Cali.
