Yes, you can pause it for 4 months, or downsize to a cheaper version with less data.

Sorry for the picture being in Dutch, but I think you may get the point. I can pause completely (button at the bottom) or choose a different subscription.

Maybe this varies by country? Whenever I pause it asks if I will use it again within 12 months. I always say yes.

I have my older Gen 2 dishy on pause now that I have the mini and it’s been paused for 8 months. Plan to use it as a home backup connection if the need ever arises.

Even Elon tweeted that this is a great option for home backup connections. Pause until you need it. I’ve never seen anything about a 4 month restriction.

There appears to be no restriction:

There is no explicit maximum time limit for pausing a Starlink Roam subscription. According to Starlink’s official website and user discussions, you can pause and un-pause the Roam service at any time, with the pause taking effect at the end of your current billing cycle. The service remains paused until you choose to reactivate it, and no monthly fees are charged during the paused period.
However, there are a few considerations:
• Firmware Updates: Some users suggest keeping the equipment connected periodically to receive firmware updates to avoid potential issues with outdated software, though active service is not required for updates.
• Account Status: Ensure your account remains in good standing, as Starlink may require action if the account is inactive for an extended period or if you’re using the service in a region subject to restrictions (e.g., “Sold Out” areas or international roaming limits).
• Regional Variations: In some countries (e.g., Peru, Colombia, Belgium, Norway, and Germany), pausing may involve a “Standby” mode with limited data and a small monthly fee, but this does not apply to standard Roam plans in most regions.
For example, users have reported pausing their Roam service for extended periods, such as six or eight months, without issues, provided the equipment is owned (not rented) and the account complies with Starlink’s terms. If you own the equipment, there’s no requirement to return it during a pause, unlike rented kits which must be returned within 30 days of cancellation.
Always check your account status on the Starlink Customer Portal and review the Terms of Service for any updates, as policies can change. If you’re planning an extended pause, it’s a good idea to confirm with Starlink support to ensure compliance with any regional or account-specific restrictions.

The only “restriction” is that you can use it at most for 2 months in a row outside of your own country. That’s what the agreement says. If you intend to use it longer, you need to change the “home” address to another location.

That’s at least the theory. There is plenty of videos on YouTube showing that it’s hardly being actually checked up to now, nor any other kind of follow up. But that may change of course.

Yes, I’ve heard this too. But that isn’t my use case. I take 2-4 weeks vacation at most per time.

Having a flexible subscription is great for pausing, but the one thing I hate is that Starlink can change pricing at any time. Mine has gone from 50 CHF to 72 CHF and now to 82 CHF a month. This is for full unlimited Roam as a 50GB plan would be less than 1-2 days for me with streaming, etc.

True, just a few weeks ago the price for unlimited was around 72€ here and now 89€. It can change overnight. Maybe it’s depending on Elon’s mood ;-)

My understanding is it’s based on density. How many plans are active in a region. In the US where they have a huge amount of users in a region the prices have gone insane. 100’s a month.

While in Latin America or South Africa it’s dirt cheap (for now)

Sorry, meant Africa in general. Don’t think it’s available in SA.

Bloody continentals bragging about their fibre speeds. We’re a third world country now in the UK ;-)
I’ve got 900Mbps BRSK fibre direct to house.
Coupled with ubiquity kit, works like a dream.

I get similar speeds all the time. Love it! We’ve been getting some hail lately so I decided to order a “Dishy Shield”. It’s a polyurethane cover that doesn’t affect signal but protects against hail, branches, etc.

Made by Australians who mount and drive around in the bush. But also means it shipped from Australia so won’t have it for a week or so.

Mine is flat mounted in a box on the roof so already shielded and it doesn’t seem to impact the performance, it does mean I can move or tilt it unless I remove it from the box.

Why is the upload speed so much slower? I can get much faster with a 4G router.
Good question that I can’t answer. For my use case it’s not important but if I were a YouTube influencer trying to upload 20 minute videos it might be an issue!

Yes I can see that is an advantage, although with a 4G router I could use a more powerful directional antenna to point to a mast that isn’t being used so heavily.

I’d rather not… I presume that’s just the way it is.. Fast download and adequate upload.

I only pay £14 per month for unlimited 5G so would need to pause for 6 months for this saving to be of benefit.

Yes, that’s handy. When I travel to Spain though I can buy a 240gb data sim for €15.

I guess the real advantage is the fact that you are guaranteed a decent level of coverage wherever you are. For me, it is not worth the cost for my usage and I can make do with 5G, although when I work remotely I just need to make sure I’m in an area with a signal!
All very good points. For me it’s so I can work remotely with confidence and as I like to camp in areas that often have little or no signal Starlink works for me. I do accept the incongruity of seeking out an isolated camp away from the crowds and then surfing the web or streaming content!

It mainly comes down to power requirements. Transmit power takes more to upload than receive power does to download. The larger flat high performance dishes have much higher upload speeds as larger dish size allows more concurrent satellite links, but at the sacrifice of surface area and more power usage.

The mini hits the sweet spot for “good enough” while being super portable and averaging 15-20 watts in my case.

I also recently went with BRSK as they agreed to credit the contract exit fee from my copper cable fibre. Though I went for the BetterNet 150 deal as that's 5 x faster than the old phone wire fibre.

I even got an Amazon voucher for referring my neighbour and he also went for 900Mbps, though I struggle to see a usage case for so much speed, with even 4k streaming only needing around 30Mbps, unless you have a huge family with 20+ devices.
