Wife has wanted to do this for years. Will be a surprise trip. I do not know the area at all

Can anyone recommend one please ?

Thank you

Hi

I've not personally been to this one, but when I was looking in the area it was on my list. I ended up staying further west, but its on my list for the future. Very close to Snowdon.

Sorry it isn't a personal recommendation, and someone may be able to give more information, but thought I would share.

Cheers

There are a number of other sites in the area, but we've stayed at that site numerous times and can recommend it; there's plenty of space and a varied choice of pitches either out in the open or sheltered. We usually try to avoid camping directly under the trees because you get big drops of rain falling on the roof (it does rain a lot!) .

The village of Beddgelert is about 15 minutes walk away and there's a good choice of pubs and eating places. The only problem is you now have to walk on the main road so make sure you are visible to traffic (used to be able to walk along a disused railway track but this is now used again by the steam trains.)

You will be lucky to get a mobile signal on the site, but in the village you should be OK if you are on Orange/T-Mobile (EE). TV reception not good either so if you need that then download some viewing material at home.

Don't forget to visit Portmeirion while you're in the area .... keep an eye out for our sand beige Cali, we are always somewhere around N Wales!

We always used the campsite in Betws-y-coed. Used to be more laid back and cheaper until it was taken over. Pricier and more regimented now but good facilities and ideal location for pubs, resteraunts, shops.

That looks great. I wonder how long the camp site has been there?

We had an evening meal in that pub a few years back, we had walked from the forestry site at Beddgelert and were fortunate that when we came out a bus just happened to be passing going in our direction saving us a long (semi) drunken walk ... o_O

That's put an idea in my head for this weekend :thumb

Thank you for the suggestions. I found it strange that no "obvious" places emerged on internet searches, so these leads very helpful

Funnily enough I've been looking into this myself just recently. It all really depends if you want to drive to begin your ascent of Snowdon, then which particular route you want to take up. There are sites on all sides so whichever route you decide is for you there will be a site to cater. My personal preference is not to drive so it's +1 for Gwynant from me as The Miners/Pyg route up and Watkins path down are in easy reach - well a long day on the mountain. If you want something free of the 'yoof' have a look on www.coolcamping.co.uk for ideas.

We did the Rhyd Ddu path a couple of years ago and stayed at Snowdonia Park (http://www.snowdonia-park.co.uk) which was OK, but we had to drive to the start of the path. I can't think why we didn't stay at Cwellyn Arms as recommended above by Serendipity C - perhaps it was full. It certainly looks good and ideal for that route.

Have used Cae Du (http://www.caeducampsite.co.uk/) in the past. I remember it being pretty quiet there.

Easy walk into Beddgelert and you can catch the steam train to the start of the Ranger's path up Snowdon, which is double ace in my world.
