hi,
Can anyone tell at what rpm you are at normal highway speed 60mph or 100km/h in highest gear, 5 speed vs. 6 speed manual gearbox?

Any thoughts about 102hp vs 150hp engine, - does the 102hp have enough to move around ?

Best regards to all and looking forward to hear your comments.

Hi and welcome from Belgium ,

Mine is a T5 140bhp DSG and find it drives smooth , T6 has 150bhp .
Never driven a 102 but did test drive the T6 4motion 204bhp .
Guess it's all depends on what are used to and drive-style.
Driving a Cali is enjoying .
But do bear in mind a fully packed Cali comes near 3tonnes so 102bhp could feel unsafe in overtaking and steep hills.

Can't help on your rpm question .

I would have considered a 102 if buying new but got an ex demo 150, and having driven it for a while I'd spend the extra on the 150 again if I had the choice again. I've never seen a 102 anywhere which might tell you something....

I went to the VW dealers to purchase a 102 but came away with a 150 manual. So glad I paid a bit extra for the 150. Dealer said they hadn't ever ordered or sold a 102. 150 has enough power whilst still being very economical considering the weight of the vehicle. I may be wrong but My concern would be that a fully laden cali would struggle for power with a five speed 102.

I would recommend looking into a reputable tuning company if looking at a smaller output engine. My understanding is that they are basically restricted by the ECU. A proper company can remap this very swiftly and inexpensively.
My Cali was a 174PS as standard, however even with that much power I still found that I was using the gearbox a lot on smaller rural roads. After much consideration I took the leap to have it remapped by a local VW specialist and from the moment I got back behind the wheel I could really notice the difference.
There has also been an small improvement in economy too.

The mapping was done by a Celtic Tuning agent locally

We just got our 102 hp and drove 5.200 km around Europe. Fully packed with bikes on the back, and the big Thule Motion 900 box filled with surfgear and other stuff. Topped with a lot of wine in the back on the trip home ;-)

The engine is still convincing and surprisingly well running (better than the 114 hp T5 we lost). Even thru the steep hills in Corse and the Alps (we went over the steep Sprüngli passing). Very agile in the lower rpm and we never felt unsafe. Cruising home with 130 - 160 km/h on the German autobahn.

Off cause it is not as powerfull as the bigger engines, but with the high taxes in DK in mind, it is very satisfactory, for the price (The 150 hp is around +5.000 £). I really would suggest that you try one, not relying on "I think". The 102 hp really surprised me!

I have to look into the RPM at 100 km/h.

EDIT: BTW, VW even make a 84 hp version …

Hard to argue against this experience.
I suppose for me when I was weighing up which engine to get I decided that I might always secretly wish I'd picked the more powerful engine and when spending so much money I didn't want a regret of that magnitude.
I think the 150 is spot on for the van.
Always love having the 6th gear. It seems to 'relax' nicely into cruising in that gear. When I had a t5 102 van it always felt like it had another gear to settle into but obviously it wasn't there.
You can always tune your engine to get more performance as the above poster says (although warranty issues) but you can't add the extra gear retrospectively.
If you're wondering I think you should just go for the 150.

Please note that you should not compare the T5 engines to the T6. It feels like there are magnificent differences in placement of torgue. And the trend is now, that the producers will get more power out of smaller engines.

The gearbox has also changed, så you do not longer have the missing gear feeling. I suppose they moved the torgue peak to lower rpm. It feels more like there is no more power after 4.000 rpm.

If you want to chiptune, there are limitations in DK. If you tune over 20% you need to prove that the car is capable of handling the extra power (from the producer). You need to do a emission test, to prove that the car do not emit more than the original car and that you are not consuming more fuel. And then go to the approval center (SYN) to get it accepted on the registration.

All this said, we took the 104 because of all the circumstances with our first cali (114 hp) that got wrecked, and it was a demo we could get right away. I was really concerned and in doubt about the smaller engine. But must say it has come to shame, the 102 does a better job than you would expect. And better that the 114 we lost.

If I should buy a new Cali today, I would off cause consider the 150 or more, but not sure its worth the extra money and it would be a decision on budget and other extras, as the navisystem that i miss more than the ekstra hp (its 3.000 £ in DK).

Mine is the 114 and I find it perfectly good to drive, so if the 102 feels better I wouldn't hesitate to consider one.

My 104 runs 60 km/h + 1.200 rpm, 80 km/h + 1.600 rpm and 100 km/h + 2.150 rpm.

In normal city and countryside driving its very dynamic and sufficient. The only places we felt a lack was on the steep climbs on the german Autobahn (near Kassel). There I was limited to 120 km/h with the pedal to the metal. As i recall speed limits was about the same in this area.

I can't imagine why anyone would consider less than the max available in such a heavy vehicle. ??

There is about 15.000 £ difference between the 104 and the 204 model in Denmark. So economics might play a part. ;-)
