T7-based California announced for end of 2023

The concept of a new generation of the California camper van will make its world premiere at the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf (25 August – 3 September).

The future generation of the California will be based on the long Multivan and will continue to be produced by Volkswagen in Hanover, Germany, and is scheduled to be built from 2024 onwards.

As I understand it, the T7 California will be one of a growing family of future Californias. Their will be the Caddy, T7, ID Cali and Amrok versions.
 
Be interesting what colour paint choice they come in.

But in general the app is very pointless. You can mark points on a map à la Google Maps, just more basic. And view the instruction manual as pdf
 
Having just had my 6.1 in at the dealer last week to have every piece of software updated, I remain to be convinced about VAG's software ability. This just seems like another unnecessary piece of tech.

Personally I have never really liked the aesthetics of the Transit nor pretty much any other van! Even the current Transit I find looks a bit mis-proportioned and awkward, as for the front - urgh, it's more than a bit Marmite. Of course, no doubt the Transit community say the Transporter is boring and plain looking. I don't think the market will move away from the history and cult status of the VW bus as a brand though. Now what really would be an interesting move would be if VW decides they aren't going down the full-camper route, if they actually instead made a line of "conversion-ready" Transporters/Multivans basically engineered to be easier to convert. That said, small(er) market than a basic van.

It is a bit confusing as VW originally referred to the T7 Multivan, but now it’s just the Multivan. Once more details of the Transit collaboration are released we will know the final terminology. My guess is that T7 will be used for the Transit based platform… but it’s just a guess :oops:

The T was for the Transporter platform. I think VW realised they were taking the mick trying to apply it to a car based MBQ chassis.

First time I hear about this "California on tour" app for the 6.1.

Can find it on here but not available in the app store on my phone, so only for Deutschland?
It’s available in Switzerland, just had a quick play, first impression is it looks fancy and it’s fast, but after a few minutes searching for places I’ve stayed at it didn’t really come up with much

VW need to get their tech up to date, it clear from comments made on the forum they can’t even seem to get carplay to function correctly on their ‘own’ units, and blame Apple….whilst 3rd party Headunits function with no issues.

Our EV tells you on your phone when a software update is due, you then push a button and it updates whilst it’s parked on the driveway…no need to book in a at dealership, driving miles, creating unnecessary emissions, wasting time etc.

This is spot on. But it’s not just VW, it’s VAG group - way behind the drag curve. My Cupra Born is a fantastic car in almost every way. Yet the app tells me I have a 120 mile range but the car tells me it’s 230 miles. Getting the app and the car talking the same language really shouldn’t be hard. Every time I get in I have to reset the the climate temperature because it can‘t go from one day to the next. The control screen is soooo slooowwww. I could go on, and on…
The only time my Cali has been in the workshop other than for routine servicing is to sort the entertainment system, or perhaps more accurately the HMI, out. It just wasn’t communicating with anything. Every single person in the servicing side of the garage was stumped. Sure, they could change the oil and filter but beyond that they didn’t have a clue. Not good enough. They called the salesperson out of the showroom who at least understood what the problem was , but couldn’t solve it. It took 6 weeks and comms from VW HQ - through me not the dealership - to get it sorted. Effectively a simple software reload.
They are being left way behind, trading on a complete indifference to the customer who wants a seemless, integrated experience. Just as they don’t want to worry about the wrong EGR code leading to excessive oil use, they don’t want worry about leaking bellows and they don’t want to worry about whether the tech will work or not.
It’s not rocket science, it should be a better user experience. It’s not just VW, it’s certainly VAG, but I’m not sure how much wider. But I am sure it’s not good enough, and I am sure that in time - if it doesn’t improve markedly - customers will migrate to the brands that do it better.

As an existing Nugget owner, I can see there are some sensible improvements here over the existing version (blinds instead of curtains, chairs built into the tailgate etc). But you still have the same issue with buying one, that if anything goes wrong Ford won't be much help.

We recently split the roof fabric (kids, don't ask), and Ford can't help. Westfalia will send a new roof fabric from Germany, but Ford won't fit it as they don't have experience doing that. So you end up in this weird situation where you have a vehicle bought from Ford, which you then have to pay a third party to fix. In our case, we need to find a third party pop-up roof company to fit the Westfalia supplied new roof fabric.

Reads a bit like Transit meets T6.1 in terms of the van's "innovations", but it's a hopeful sign for the future T7.
