Just recieved my tax renewal, expected to pay around £500 as I have for the past few years as I did with my previous Cali... anyway, £345, I thought taxes only went up in UK?

I thought it would have the plus 40K luxury loading too, but it seems not.
I haven't bought any tax yet as its only 3 months old but seems the dealer charge was £345.

I'm sure I read somewhere there was a reason, but I can't find it right now.

Yep, well over the 40k purchase price. Still extortionate at £345 but probably best not ask questions...

I won't tell if you don't!!
I had one month left of the £550 Tax when got rid and spent 65k on the Cali... here we go again I thought - another 5 years of extortion!!

Yup, just had the same with the wife's 69 plate tiguan, first few years 450+ , this year 190.

Result.

My California replacement, a Hybrid Multivan, £0 VED and No luxury Car Tax. M1 and MPV on V5c.
Only until April this year then it’s £195 but you have swerved the £40k+ tax supplement.

That not right and first year tax is different. So the BMW hybrid was £20 in the first year and now £565, £590 etc p.a a...... .spends 93%, due to battery range, in EV mode

What's not right?

Welshgas would come under the "Electric, zero or low emission cars registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025" in the extract below from the .gov site

From 1 April 2025, registered keepers of electric, zero or low emission cars, vans and motorcycles will need to pay vehicle tax in the same way as registered keepers of petrol and diesel vehicles. This change will apply to both new and existing vehicles.

This new measure removes band A under the existing VED system which is currently £0. Vehicles in this band will be required to move to the first band where a rate becomes payable.

How the changes will affect your vehicle
Electric, zero or low emission cars registered on or after 1 April 2025
You will need to pay the lowest first year rate of vehicle tax set at £10 from 1 April 2025. From the second tax payment onwards, you will pay the standard rate. This will be £195.

Electric, zero or low emission cars registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025
You will pay the standard rate. This will be £195.

Electric, zero or low emission cars registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017
These vehicles will move to the first band that has a VED value. This will be £20.

A band was prior to 2017. Post 2017 there was in principle one rate and a supplement (ignore the exemption offered to EVs / zero emissions vehicles) i.e <40k RRP and >40k RRP

Our X5 has slightly lower emission then the T7 MPV hybrid overall. As the car cost is north of the 40k mark the VED is the £195 plus the luxury car supplement minus £10 - so its £590 this year

T7 Hybrid starts at £48k ish.....Alas in the same bracket unless there is an exemption for MPVs

What the change would affect is my old Outlander Hybrid from 2015. That was band A and £0 VED. This will now be scrapped April 2025 and this will go into Band B (£20-30 ish)

Just checked...first year rate on the BMW was £10 (not itemised on the invoice) whilst the P400 Defender was £2375 (itemised)
