Hi
With the growing family, and associated faff, I’ve decided to get a trailer to clear some room rather than get a bigger van.

I’m in the south east and will happily travel for a good condition trailer at a fair price.

I’m interested in a GT750 VT1. Don’t mind brakes or unbraked. Ideally with roof bars on top so we can take bikes or possibly a pop up tent.

Thanks

I bought an old Daxara 147 trailer.
It had 10” wheels on. £150
Took it to Indespension.
And they upgraded the base £150 (used my suspension from old trailer, into new frame) and bolted it on.
With new bearings and 13” wheel and tyres.
Now have a 650kg trailer.
£300 I have the same as a new Daxara 147.

Or buy a new 148 dax for £1140
Including hard top, cycle carrier etc.

Have you looked at hiring? Firstly to see if a given trailer works for you size-wise and design-wise, secondly as an alternative to buying outright ?

Just remember that the national speed limit for an unbraked trailer is 50mph.
I've had both and for long distances a braked trailer is better (60 mph) speed limit.
And your not allowed in the outside lane of a three lane motorway.

I have an Anssems GT750 201 HT with fitted spare and Thule roof bars. Nearly new, used for one trip Norfolk to Cornwall last year. PM me if interested.

There is no difference in speed limits between braked and unbraked trailers in the uk. They are both 50mph on single carriageways and 60 on dual carriageways and motorways.

Excellent! Someone is awake.
All the new towing rules confuse the crap out of me!

New !! the towing speed limits last changed in 1986 only 39 years ago.
There were the driving licence changes in 1998 which meant you had to do an extra test to tow a trailer >750kg. I only got it when I passed my CE, but that also means I could drive a 44tonne artic on a daily basis, but I'm still not allowed to drive a minibus!!

so clever clogs when did the hgv limits change on a single carriageway? Because in January 1998 when I did my HGV it was 40mph on a single carriageway.
I'm old enough to have everything including a minibus. :)
Having read these trailer rules, it's pot luck based on your Date of Birth, when you passed your test, how heavy your towing vehicle is unless you an old codger with "grandad rights" that are withdrawn at 70 by DVLA unless you specifically ask them not to. MY HGV medical is due in November.

The towing rule was confusing, you could actually tow a small caravan when the rule was in place. It was to do with the total weight of your outfit. I think it was stopped a couple of years ago. Now, I think everybody can tow upto 3.5 tones.

The Internet says its something to do with a shortage of HGV drivers. I can handle a 13m car and caravan, now I want to be a trucker.

Even more confused reading that. It all looks good until you realise the cali weighs 3080kg fully loaded (and most are close or over that fully kitted out with 4 people in there). So does that mean you can only tow a 420kg trailer. I thought it was all scrapped, I know people (young) that are towing 3500kg plant trailers behind loaded transit vans.

I'm not that bothered because I'm old and have a category C truck license,l. It's just good to understand for our younger members.

A lot depends when you passed your test.

You can tow a lot more than that. I can tow 2.5 tonnes with mine, and regularly tow a car transporter trailer (plus car) with it.

Yes, the california is rated to tow 2500kg but it is suggested in the article of a 3500kg mam limit imposed by the uk driving license, I was talking about.

I think the confusing bit on the government web site is they talk vehicle and trailer combination weight on people passing before Jan 97 of 8250kg but only mention maximum vehicle weight and maximum trailer weights on passing after Jan 97. No vehicle and trailer conbination weight.
