Some of you requested a map of the visitors use the forum , now the new server is done this has been installed.

Its a bit of a gimmick but its interesting to see how many people around the world read what we all talk about.

You can find the UserMap if you are using a desktop or tablet, the map is still accessible via mobile if you know the URL , but obviously we've removed the nav link for mobile as it takes up space. The User Map link can be found in the first link of the secondary navigation under the "Home" tab.

Or by clicking here : http://vwcaliforniaclub.com/members/usermap

Please note , if you click on a map marker it will display a sign saying "View on Google Earth". To use this function you will need to have Google Earth installed on your computer. If you havent got it installed it will simply try and download a small file and nothing will happen.

Enjoy

Interesting feature, useful to see if we have any near neighbours.

Where does it get the location info from? Obviously we wouldn't want it to give the exact location, but it thinks I am in St Albans, about 200 miles away. :D

The location will be to your closest ISP datacentre ( basically the first stop your internet connection has before it dives off around the world ), which isnt massively accurate but gives you a rough surrounding area view, for example i believe my closest datacentre is Peterborough yet im closer to Kings lynn which is 40 mins away.

Why does it place me in the middle of the channel:shocked

Is it trying to tell me something???

I'm in Bournemouth according to the map... over 200 miles away; still, I'd rather be parked up in my Cali by the South Coast than sinking somewhere out in the channel, Jen :D

Maud, it is showing you as XXXXXXXXXXXX ? Does that mean anything to you?

Well according to the Map - I don't exist. No one in Wales at all!

Oh that's not so far away - only about 33 miles from me and in the right county. When I look on the map and click on the 'Show yourself' button, it takes me to Bournemouth each time for some reason!

Hmmmm. Shows me in Entlebuch in Germany or Austria which is a little vague for just south of Nottingham!

Just rechecked because another site thought I was in the US! Entlebuch is in Switzerland and apparently I'm still there... Out of body experience obviously!

Nope. I hope not anyway. Although it could explain why my broadband speed is variable if the indicators show the local ISP data centre. Also I'm a fully paid up member so should be a different colour.

is that you in Hyderabad?

Nope, but I notice there is a Guest in Hong Kong.

Also there are 2 Spiders on the map, 1 in San Jose, California (appropriate) and 1 in Seattle. We're being spied upon.

Two spiders in the US of A?

A web of intrigue is developing :shocked

I always keep my location setting turned off, presume that should mean I do not register on this?

You will be on it but it uses your IP address, it will give just a very rough location so nobody needs to worry about privacy.

We added this more for seeing where our international members are from as we have seen a real increase over the last year.

Hi there Martin! A while ago a new Black Ocean (light grey awning) came to live in my neighborhood (near Brussels). So I went to check the User Map. And indeed I found for the first time a Cali appearing in my village (before I personally never was shown). So I zoomed in, and more, and more, ...till it seems a guy (of who I don't want to reveal his name here), is standing exactly in... my garden? o_O

If the Black Ocean also living on "the mountain" here would read this, I am the one who put a business card under your wipers, inviting you here on this forum.
:cheers

Edit: I suppose I just live by accident at the generic marking spot of our village. I googled the name of the man, who seems to have a practice on the other side of the village, so could there then be three of us?? Exciting!
I wanted to delete this message since less relevance, but how does one do that? I can only modify, but not remove?

Nosing around my patch ..... @Silverfox is shown on the map near Bognor Regis on the south coast, but when you open up the pin it says Lake District UK? Best we have to offer around hear are a few ponds!

How accurate to your location is it...?

I cannot find my name on the map. Although there are aproximately 15,000 members only 5000 on the map. what are the criteria for entry?
