Just wondering how detailed the vw diagnostic tool is
as our cali went into limp mode a couple of days ago and vw advised us to take it to the nearest van centre asap
we decided to drive back (limp back on all the back roads)to our usual vw garage but wondered if there is a log showing times or mileages when events occur as a possible way of invalidating the warranty

Faults will normally be given a time/date & mileage stamp when it occurred. Also there is likely to be a Priority and Frequency counter.

Limp mode really is to safeguard the power train, you should probably have not driven it like that and called VW assist.

As a sort of worst case scenario If you had a CEL ( Check Engine Light) due to a failure to regenerate the DPF then you could now have blocked it beyond the point at which it can be safely regenerated without risk of catching fire - brace yourself for a hefty repair bill!!

It could of course be something less damaging but the bottom line is don't ignore the warning.

The example below is a VCDS output which is similar to the VAG 1551/1552 (recently updated to ODIS) tool dealers may use. -
