Hi all just a quick question and I know there has been many posts on this subject
My van is just 3 years in a week or so
got a quote from VW for extended warranty
my van has 19000 miles on it it's a 4motion dsg 204
They have quoted me 809 with no excess the lady said that all components means everything that was on the vehicle when manufacturered with a VW part number
That seems comprehensive to me
Would you bother or not worry about it
Any feedback will be welcome

VW quoted me £800 on a Touareg 3 years ago so I reckon that’s pretty ok given all the extra gubbins on a Cali

  • Agree
Reactions: Loz
but also think of it this way, a new egr, or a new Haldex pump job on the rear end will cost that on its own..

It's insurance, so it needs to be cost-effective to be worthwhile. The vast majority of vans won't need anything like £800 of repairs in year 4. If you are unlucky enough to have a major fault you'll easily pay £1000+.

For me, the extended warranty at purchase is a no-brainer (£329 + VAT for two years), but I'd take my chances rather than pay £800 a year. Having said that I'm not really a fan of any of the add-on insurances that you can get these days.

That’s a lot cheaper than I was quoted for a 180 4m a couple of years ago. Difficult decision, you have to be sure you will keep it for the full term and not get itchy feet.

I paid for 2 year extended warranty on a car and then p/x’d It a few months later. Despite what I was told, they didn’t give me any extra for the remaining warranty.

Repairs can be very expensive, my son’s Sportline developed a DSG transmission fault just out of warranty which cost about £600. It turned out to be a wiring loom fault but could have been much worse.

Depends if you like a gamble!

Cheers appreciate your thoughts I think I'm going to go without 800 is quite a big repair also if any wiring issues like for that sportline that is excluded from warranty
Gamble it is then

The Extended Warranty bought after 3 years of Factory Warranty is not the same product. Their are limits on milage and also cash limits on Claims.
I also, after numerous conversations with them, do not believe they know what they are talking about as regards the degree of cover. They were not aware of the Hydraulic Roof, Fridge, Control Panel, Inverter etc: so check very carefully.

Hi read your comprehensive posts regarding the extended warranty very good it was to
They specifically told me all factory fitted parts are covered but when you read the booklet it's a bit well maybe it does or maybe it doesn't
My van has had a lot of warranty ( egr, roof motor, n76 valve, steering) so I'm actually thinking what was going to break has or am i being foolish

Not foolish at all. I had it for year 4, about £440, but this year No Go as I've just passed 80,000 miles.

Thanks appreciate your help with this definitely not going to get it

I paid £649 ex VAT for extending the warranty to 5 years (or 150k miles whichever comes first) when I bought my new Cali Ocean in Jan 2019. It seemed like a no-brainer due to better re-sale value and it covers all the components in the van. So you got an even better deal at £329!!!!

Yeah but my van is 3 years old now like the thread says worth taking a chance

The £329+VAT extended warranty limits you to a total of 80k miles in the 5 years.... that must be the difference between £329 & £649. No way I was doing anything like that mileage, even using it as an everyday car, so took the lower mileage option

I’m in the same situation with the £810 quoted from VW for one year based on 10k miles and full cover with zero excess.

I was surprised how expensive it was in comparison with the cost of taking out the extra two year cover at purchase of the van.

I have a few weeks to decide, but I’m edging towards self insurance as suggested by a few others...unless my horse comes up on the National!

At that age & mileage there’s a chance that you’d get an out of warranty goodwill contribution from VW, we did. So for me, I’d save the cash.

Self insurance is an option. Sometimes the claim limit on a single claim is only £1000 so if you were to claim £1000 once in a year you would only save £200.
If you couple that with the fact that there is great advice on here then you might be able to to repair it much cheaper. Also you are not tied in to going to a VW dealer so going to a specialist again might save you some money.

Good to read this. My 2018 Cali Ocean was bought with a 5yr extended warranty which expires in Jan 2024. My van has 31,000 miles on it. Thinking of buying an annual extended warranty but the service reception told me it would not cover things like the fridge, hydraulic roof...i.e. all the internal stuff - just mechanical parts and failures. I have a local garage who can maintain the engine, brakes, exhaust (i.e all the stuff you get on a standard Transporter) but probably wouldn't have a clue about those parts unique to a Cali Ocean. Any thoughts?

Look at the VW all-in package, gets you a proper VW warranty + servicing + VW assist for a competitive price.

All in One is good as the packaged deal and there is a 25% discount on at the moment.
It does say on the warranty that it is up to 2 years does anyone know what triggers it to end.
