This also happened to me in Barcelona. For the record the police advised me not to leave the vehicle on the street and park it underground which was a Ricky with a roof box. Unfortunately a camper van is like a honey pot in any big city so I just try to avoid them, best visited by easyjet

Intending to travel in that direction in September. Looks like I shall be plugging my Carista dongle in and setting doors to auto lock whilst on the move. Sensible heads up awareness has kept me safe so far whilst traveling but I can see that being in a U.K. Registered Cali is like driving around with a target on your back.
