Hello,
I know this has been discussed a bit before but I asked a police driving trainer re speed restrictions for a VW California ocean. The response I got was;
If it weighs more than 3050kg from factory then you need to adhere to speed restrictions for a Van. Eg 10 miles less on motorway etc.
The California ocean has a listed weight of 3080kg, therefore I assume I should follow the speed restrictions for vans?

Says maximum unladen weight - I believe the 3080kg figure for the Cali is Max Gross Weight - i.e. laden weight. So should be same as car.

Thankyou, I’ve managed to find that it does say ULW on the gov.uk websites.

Incorrect as you have already found out.

No worries, I guess it depends on the interpretation of the phrase "If it weighs more than 3050kg from factory" - assumed they meant unladen weight there.

Would be a bit concerned if those employed to uphold the law were working on poor info ...

Living near Zürich, I had a spare half hour when passing the entrance to our local friendly motorway police depot. I knew they have a weighbridge there that they use to nick overweight Romanian trucks. A quick chat and they weighed our Ocean 6.1.
It had most of the things in it we camp with, minus wine and water. Weighing was with me on board. It weighed 2’800 kg, which is not far from the max 3’080. Add passengers, water, ooops!
I am sure I ticked the box for “Increased maximum weight” and must check, but the reg says 3’080.
I’ve heard that especially the Italians are keen on weighing campers. The fines are high, and you have to dump stuff until you are legal before they’ll let you drive onwards.
Be warned!

Its a lot closer to being empty than full! brochure says 2703kg empty with a 75kg driver.

You've got a quarter of a tonne still to use, 30kg of water and 220kg for passengers

If it was me, I'd have to deduct the drivers 'excess weight' first though .. :)

Hi - useful thread this. Thanks.

Towbar, awning, DSG or other options will reduce the payload figure.

Awning & DSG won't as they are standard factory fitment & included in the unladen weight.

A 2018MY will also have a different payload to a current one as the adblu tank is bigger.

Quoted figures were for a standard 6 speed manual. OP shows as having a 204 which only came with DSG and therefore may be using incorrect unladen weight as a guide.

Sorry I missed the manual bit, what he also hasn't mentioned is that the only van that weighs 2518 unladen is the petrol engined model!

The Correct unladen weight for a 204 Diesel 2018 MY DSG is 2568KG
