What is this accessory?

Our van came with this. It looks like it’s a cup holder or a holder for one of the bins in the van but where is it installed ?

Yes a cup holder. Fits inside the rail of the hob/sink unit.

You havnt missed much, without an additional cage most cups & all cans just fall straight through, They are also designed for the rail on T5.1 & T6 calis - the T6.1 rail seems to be a slightly different profile & that holder doesn't fit anywhere near as securely so its a bit of of a lottery as to whether its secure or not.
They do however fit very snuggly on the rail in the grand Californias next to the rear seats but VW don't supply one with those.
