Window replacement - advice needed

Having had a window panel shattered, it took me ages to find a place that could source and replace it. Instead of the pane, I was told it had to be the whole unit replacement. We got a couple of quotes, tho I wasn't overly confident they were genuine as they kept coming back with questions despite sending photos, model details etc. anyway, it's a 1995 so I realised it might not be too easy.

We took our van to a VW specialist in Croydon - they quoted a price, for removal and replacement. When I went to collect they said they had removed the window which had proved trickier than expected, they'd subcontracted a firm to replace the unit and blah blah blah, bit more expensive than quoted. I could have argued, but with kids in tow, sunny afternoon, super hot office, and prospect of long drive back thru rush hour, I paid up and left.

Couple of days later, inspecting work I detail, there is left over sticky material on side of van (I assume they stick panel in Place before fixing), but what has made me furious is that they cut out the old window panel - literally cutting through the inside panelling so the window is no longer sealed inside the van. What were they thinking? I didn't notice until I was outside the van with the sliding window open - you can see how they hacked away at the panel, and it's open so things can just slot things in / or liquid seep in) between window unit and panelling. We've called and I'm going back today again. VW admitted they removed window prior to subcontracted window company refitting new unit, so I know it's VW that's liable. What I can't figure out is how they are now supposed to fix this problem. They've cut the panelling all the way around the window, so would I expect them to replace all the panels? I think it's 3 separate panels - I can't imagine it's possible to purchase and refit panels without major work on the van, I wonder if there are sealants they can fit?

Either way, they've messed up my van, it'll be worth less on re-sale, and I'm livid. I can reclaim the money as I paid on card, but it's more the further damage they've done to the van that I'm worried about. What are your thoughts on this? Should I post some pics?
Should I not worry about it at all?

Here are some pics.
If there are any other older model (mine is 1995) Westfalia Californias out there, I would really appreciate similar photos so I can compare and send to the garage to ensure they see what the problem is and what they need to do to make good.

Last time I rely on VW to do a decent job. Off to recommended specialist methinks!

Looks messy, can understand why you are upset!

Is that the sliding window on the sliding door?

I can take some photos of mine ('91) later, or you are welcome to pop round and take any photos you want (I recall you are not to far from us).

I've got replacement plastics from Gunzl before, but I think in that area any Caravelle plastics would match?

Bunch of cowboys must have done this job.

Was it done at a "proper" VW dealership? If it was then take it back and INSIST they replace all the panels that were cut, if you don't get satisfaction contact VW services and complain. If no satisfaction from them then contact your local Trading Standard Office and get advice from Citizens Advice or a solicitors.
Don't let them get away with it.

Thanks for your responses, much appreciated.

I've a LHD model, and this is on the left hand side, sliding window behind the driver's seat, opposite side to the sliding door.

Yes, proper VW dealership - can I name and shame? It's VW Commercial Vehicles - Southern Motor Group in Croydon on Landsdowne Road.

I would love pictures of yours please twentyonethirtyfive - just a couple of simple ones to show how the panels mould round to the edges. They tried to tell me that perhaps just a seal was missing, and perhaps I'd be happy with a full valet once they can source and fit the seal. Any evidence I can have to pass on to them would be very welcome, because I'd be able to insist on a proper solution instead of a mickeymouse stick-on coverup. And I can pass on pictures to VW head office if needed. I suppose at least there will be a head office to complain to, so I'll hang on to that grain of hope!

Hopefully this will take you to an album of pictures.

There are no seals, the plastics just butt cleanly against the frame.

And yes, I know the shutters need painting and the hallway needs a carpet!

That's perfect, thanks so much. I'll send them my photos and the originals of yours so they'll see there is no seal that's missing. I can imagine this will end up in small claims court! Thanks for providing evidence that'll help a lot!

No problem, shout if you need any other pictures.

Hope you get it sorted out.

My god, what a disgusting piece of vandalism. I can just imagine the perpetrators upon seeing what they had just done hatching a cunning plan to keep schtum about it.

I hope you get sorted. Consider small claims court as a last resort

There are just so many examples of collateral damage when you entrust vehicles with repair shops. Does anyone insist on being present whilst they do the work to prevent such stupidity ?

Don't trust them to valet it either. My speedo screen was recently scratched in a vw main dealer valet. These folk really are absolute retards.

I appreciate your comments. I was left absolutely fuming and they did try to make me feel like it's a piece of junk anyway, so what on earth was I worrying about?

I doubt very much I'll end up back there even for corrective work - I'll get quotes from some specialist places and maybe that's the way forward. I don't trust them to care enough to do the work properly especially if I kick up a fuss.

Hmmm, anyone with recommendations for places to go for westfalia interiors?

Cheers for that, I also stumbled across that company when searching. The name sounds dodgey as, but the website and pictures that go with it seem to match up nicely with my needs.

No negative feedback is a good starter! Thanks for info.

Sorry that you've had this problem you must be gutted, have you asked SMG to sort it out?

Yes, I went straight back to SMG - they came and looked and sympathised - " yes it looks like it's been cut, but we had no reason to cut it." Manager came out, I repeated "it came into their workshop with fitted panels, it's come back with cut panels that flap about". "Yes, no ones calling you a liar, I'm just saying we had no need to cut it."

manager's manager came out, said straight away, "That's obviously been cut, but perhaps a seal is missing". Offers to source the seal, sends me away with intention to source a seal, and free compete valet when work is done (which is also to cover cost of removing the sticky gunk left on the side of the van where they sealed the hole before fitting new window).

I have since emailed with photos of the van (thanks to forum!) and asked them to source new panels, as there is no seal missing. But that's been 3 working days, and still no acknowledgement of receipt or any kind of reply.

There are a selection of interior parts available at Gunzl, maybe they have the parts required?

Guessing B and C pillar covers and overhead (will the Exclusive panel be the same?).

I suspect the VW garage will have little or no knowledge of where to source Westfalia fittings, so worth passing the info on.

Be wary though. I changed one of my panels which had a crack and the colour match was poor. I suspect it was the right colour, it's just not had over 20 years of sunlight and campervan living applied to it.

Fitting a rubber seal may actually produce the best finish, if not original look. Guess you'll know what lurks beneath it though. Tough one, I know.
