Yes I have done this, from memory it was October and a little murky with some snow and iffy conditions.

Well worth it though.

Thank you! Really nice of you. Is August a good time to visit? Is camping permitted anywhere or must I use official camp sites? Thanks Steve

august is OK. the weather is fine but it's little busy.... a lot of people going up in this period of time. you can camp anywhere, there are no restrictions. I think that this year they will dry the lake for cleanup so the view will not be so nice. I will find out for sure next weekend because we are planning for a bike ride up to the top so I can ask the people at the dam.

ahhh I forgot... you can also try transaplina is very nice same as Transfăgărășan and is quite close.
