We splashed out at the weekend and bought one of these and tried it out at home last night
You put the food to be cooked in the pans, heat the pans up by whatever means you have, put the pans in the container and leave it. This means that a meal can be put on to cook in the morning and is ready to eat after travelling, day out etc without any fuss

What is the physical size? I would be concerned that it would mean leaving something else behind to make space for it ... did you get the traveller version?
 
Yes, the Traveller version with the top pot. Offer on at the Motorhome Show at the weekend for £110.

It's 10in high and 12in over handles
 
We use one of these they are great, there is also no need to carry other saucepans as the two with the system are cracking pans. We often start the meal before leaving home drive 500 miles and have a hot meal at the other end. It is dear but well worth the money. We have the 5ltr version.
 
We’ve had one for a number of years and love it. Their service is great too- the knob on the lid broke and they provided a free replacement

Any further reviews on these as we’re thinking of getting one before our forthcoming 18 day trip with lots of driving. It would be nice to arrive and not have to cook but perhaps these just shift the cooking stage to the morning. Most reviews elsewhere are good apart from a few: and I can see where those are coming from.

The principle looks ideal but I’m concerned it’s just an expensive way of keeping the meal that you prepared in the morning warm (and then only for 7 hours provided you fill it correctly). Don’t you end up with something insipid like meals on wheels used to serve to my gran in the 70s and are uncooked veg (such as carrots) cooked at the end? I appreciate it doesn’t really slow cook and things like stewing steak will still be inedible.

Also are the cheaper thermal cookers on Amazon etc just as good as Mr Ds at half the price ?

I’ve been thinking of one of these for awhile and have the same reservation regarding the need to do preparation before hitting the road, normally I’m rushing around searching for socks. I’ve not seen anything similar apart from on eBay but they are only from international sellers with very high postage.
I tend to take pre prepared and frozen/chilled in the fridge for reheating.
If I do go down the thermal cooker route it will be a Mr D!

Well it doesn't just keep warm what you have cooked. It actually cooks it over a period of time. Basically you prepare the meal in the normal way, bring the cooker up to temperature and then remove from the heat and leave it to cook.
We have never had a problem with it cooking anything and generally found it hot enough to eat in the evening. Onviously there are exceptions to this but a quick warm up again takes care of it.
It's personal preference if you prefer to do the preparation first thing or when you get to your destination or return from the days activities. For us, it's prepare in the mornig and then it's ready when you get there or are knackered after a days walk/whatever. You could always prepare the meal the evening before amd then set if off cooking in the morning while having brekky if you wanted to.
Can't comment on any other cookers other than to say you generally get what you pay for and the Mr D is proven to work well.
 
Thanks for the advice both. Well we’ve bought a MrDs and I’ll report back with how it goes. Incidentally there are no alternatives that are easily available in the UK. You can get the Thermos Shuttle Chef via Amazon Japan but they’re no cheaper and you can’t seem to get an extra top pot.
 
Anyone at the Slimbridge meet that has one of these fancy a little demo for the campervan cookout channel?

I will be filming some stuff for the club channel so seems a good opportunity.
