Hi all, about to purchase my first Cali and wanted to see what you all thought.

Looking at an 06 plate Cali SE TDI auto with 57k miles on the clock. Cost wise I’m looking at £27,000

Any thoughts? All comments gratefully received

Which engine?
Any toys?
Service history?
Private or dealer?
Any warranty?

I paid 30k for a low mileage (45k) 2008 174 2.5 auto, lots of extras and mint condition with full history and 6 month warranty.

Maybe share a link if you have one?

Hi ted,
Dealer, It’s pretty good inside, couple of loose trims but dealer fixing, no service in last 2 years but only done 2k miles so didn’t alarm me too much.
It’s the 174 2.5 auto immaculate outside

price is not important i overpaid for mine but i love it and dont care. if you like it and can afford it buy it

Cheers and I know what you mean I guess with it being a big purchase always a little bit of concern that you’re overpaying. was weighing up the 06 Cali or a more recent 2013-16ish T5.1 conversion - just liked the Cali when I saw it

I have just seen a 2010 se come up for sale the same price i sold mine for 5 years ago. go for the cali :thumb

Sorry should have replied to you directly Ted, see above details with link

Similar to mine, I love it and have no regrets buying it. 174 pulls well and the habitation space on the early T5’s is pretty close to what you get on the newer vans
Just looked at the MOT history and it’s hardly been used in the last couple of years!
Looks neat and tidy.

No parking sensors - I find these dead useful, can get something retro fitted I guess, not sure if the dealer can help out?

Check the table is in the door still, couldn’t see it in the photos.
Also check to see if there is a parking heater remote control too. (Small buttoned key fob)
Both of these are a few quid to replace if needed.

I spent about 3 months researching, 1 month of remote shopping/talking trade ins, and then found the perfect van and bought it. (1st van I test drove, but I’d sat in a few t6’s in main dealers to get a feel.)
There’s no rush to buy the 1st you see, but that said, the sooner you get one the sooner you’ll love it!!

Cheers ted, I know it’s only got one key, it’s got reversing sensors. I’ll have to have a look at the table in the door didn’t realise there was one there until I got home from the showroom and read up, so never checked when I was there. Put a £500 deposit down as really didn’t want it to go whilst I was trying to make my mind up!!

To be honest I was looking at more recent T5.1 conversions but fell in love with the Cali when I saw it!!

Ha!
Head and Heart need to be in agreement, but it sounds like it’s close already!
Good news on parking sensors, my eyes and a phone clearly didn’t work well!!

There is a handover guide in the vip forum, but to be honest, I just tested everything I could think of when I went to pick it up, from driving, going to bed, cooking and packing up again!
Here’s a piccie if my heater remote, not sure it matters what it looks like as long as it turns on/off.

Thanks so much, have ummed and arhhed for a while, friends have a standard T5.1 (not Cali) conversion which is what peaked the interest, they are already very jealous of the electric roof!! Your post on the first 6 months of yours is excellent!

One very excited soon to be Cali owner here!!!

That's the correct remote for a 2006.its probably a Webasto parking heater rather than an eberspacher. A sticker on the door pillar will confirm.

I’ll have a look or call the garage, Is one better than the other?

I don't think there is much in it. All the early ones I've seen are Webasto. The sticker will probably show two different heaters (probably both Webasto). One is the parking heater (with the remote), the other is the coolant heater to bring your engine more quickly up to temp when it's below 4 (?) degrees C.

This is the webasto remote for a 06 California, I confirm you. You should have airtop and thermotop stickers in the door pillar. I had webasto in my old Cali, eberspacher now: cannot see the difference

I have yet another remote for the Webasto heater.
I have 2 stickers in my door: 1 Eberspächer and 1 Webasto.

One is for the Aux heater (air), the other is for the engine coolant heating.
The remote is for the aux air heater.

Mine's this bulky bugger.

And by the look of the VW logo of Big Ted's, it must be a more recent one, because I have the new non blue VW logo as well.

I think you will find that the two remotes are for differing purposes.
This one for the Aux air heater:

And this one for Aux coolant heater. (as used in north Europe for example)

oh how odd!
I‘m the second owner of the Cali, so I can’t advise what was supplied on day one, perhaps this is a replacement and they’ve supplied this version?
When I press the on button, the internal heater comes on inside by the bottom of the b pillar.
i had a quick glance yesterday and spotted 2 stickers with Webasto on them, so maybe I have an aux heater too? I think I will explore tomorrow in the light and then search the forum, if nothing turns up I’ll start a new thread to save this one going off topic.

Back to the main event - have you decided to go through with the purchase?

Well done.
Not sure the 174 has a cam belt though, but guess the dealer means a full service?

I bet the time will drag until you pick it up.
