Hi there,

I posted my first thread yesterday but seemingly broke the rules...so here we go again with the infringing question removed.

I have owned this van for about 5 years and love getting away with the family to France and Pembrokeshire.

It is in pretty good nick for the age, and we are going to keep it for the foreseeable (while the children still fit!) but I am keen to ascertain if these are holding or gaining value.

To be clear, I am not looking to sell through this post, but wonder to what extent I should try to keep the van in good shape for when we do eventually come to sell it. By comparison, a standard 21 yr old car with 178k miles on the clock would certainly not be worth doing bits of rust or waxoil treatment etc. This is a different beast, but I’m no expert, hence the request for feedback.

Keep it. We sold a 1996 1.9 TD T4 Bilbo with 170miles on the clock 2 years ago. It’s still going strong. Old T4’s are relatively easy to fix, and new replacement panels easy to source should rust ever become an issue.
 
Lovely van. Just keep up the regular maintenance and keep it. What would you replace it with? If you haven’t already discovered it, look at Autodoc for parts direct from Germany, the App is cheaper than the website (mine‘s also a left hooker).

Thank you for the Autodoc nudge - hadn’t come across it.

Re. replacing it, I’m not sure that I will. I’m hoping that we’ll continue to enjoy it for the next few years, possibly with one kid sleeping in the awning, and then...either us oldies will keep it for walking, biking and beach trips, or maybe we’ll find that we’re just not getting out in it much. So that, in a nutshell, is why I’m wondering about the value of the thing going forward, and if I should, say, spend a few hundred quid on waxoiling the underneath while there’s no rust, just to keep it spot on.

Keep it in good nick and I‘d have thought the value will be fairly static moving forward.
 
Only negative that I can think of is being banned from city centres but there are plenty buses and trains to resolve that. After all it's not a city commuter but a rural getaway vehicle.

Everything else comes out positive to keep, such as

value probably going up.
on trend older styling.
relatively simple to maintain.
etc.
