thanks for posting.

lots to absorb - no interest in the new Beach for my next van (am I also reading it right there's no roof bed?) and weighing-up differences between the Coast & Ocean. I'm not bothered about the IQ lights & powered roof, but £3,120 is a big ask for a heater ...

Love how they highlight that the bed is 5cm longer but forget to mention it’s a lot narrower ;)

Looks nice. Option list is a lot shorter than for the T6.1. Electric roof is now standard on both the Coast and the Ocean. And the Discover Pro infotainment system is now standard on the Ocean.

You can now spec a carpet in the living area! And you can spec the wireless phone charger (wasn’t available in the UK previously). The towbar is now retractable rather than removable.

Oddly enough, there’s no mention of the shower attachment at the back nor any pictures of it.

The two-tone colors are just awful :talktothehand Shame.

But really well spec’d as standard for sure.

It seems that other than an option on the Beach, there’s no spare wheel! That my absolute bugbear on vehicles. I’d be constantly paranoid about being in more remote areas.

It’s not for me. Too long, bed too narrow, limited storage, no spare wheel, expensive.

Looking at the available payloads it seems like weight is a problem.

413kg payload for the diesel Ocean. What is it on the equivalent 6.1?

ETA. 509kg on 6.1 Ocean 150

Minimum allowed at registration follows a strict formula

10kg per m in length of vehicle = 60kg
10kg per berth = 40Kg
75kg per belted passenger seat = 300kg ( for a four seater)

You would not be able to register a new Ocean with less than 400kg of payload or 485KG for a Beach

This has been a problem on the 3500kg grand Californias with different combinations of extras not being allowed without a weight upgrade .

I don't know if its a typo but the 204 engine looks to weigh a substantial amount less than the 150

A quick comparison shows that the Ocean weighs a hefty 251kg more than the equivalent size 7 seat multivan

That is about the same difference between a Tx Multivan and a Ax California.
Mine is "empty" between 2400 and 2500kg. My dad's T6 Multivan is about 2200kg.

No 204PS diesel... only 150ps diesel or a 204PS petrol (hybrid comes later)

There no doubt that this is an interior upgrade but for me its all about storage space. Our 6.1 has just enough cupboard spacefor long treks, the 7 seems to sacrifice too much space for a second sliding door and room for the passenger chair to swivel nicely, neither of which we need.

Seems we’re looking at about 80K for an Ocean diesel. Chatting to the dealer and the margin structure is apparently very different on these, so don’t expect much, if any discount.

I just noticed that the height is below the 2m mark. Which is essential here in England at least given the proliferation of barriers.

However it’s noted “with lowered suspension “ which is not mentioned elsewhere. Cost ?

I see VW still can’t afford someone to proof read their brochures! After looking at the costs regarding paint, it mentions Florida Beach blue, which is not shown in the photos. It is the Medium blue (Y5Y5) but you would think VW would pick this up prior to release!

The Multivan just doesn’t look right to me but does look a lot better with the bigger wheels but these are not available on the Beach. It’s the same story that the Beach can’t be made to look as good as the Ocean in the UK for some stupid reason.

Essential Parking heater is still a £3120 option on the Beach and also on Coast, thought this maybe standard by now.

My wife just sent me this catalogue, and listed out all of the things like this that make it worse than the 6.1 - storage, table, beds, one burner (what’s the point?)… perhaps they imagine there’s a group of people who won’t swap a 6.1 for this, but who have never owned one before? But it all feels like a massive downgrade in practical usability.

(We have a 15 & 12 yo and a small dog, current set up with awning works really well)

Always possible VW made a mistake. But I imagine that they looked at the market and saw that people who can afford something like this are by and large whealhty retired couples who only use their van in the summer months, only ever stay at campsites, don’t cook in the van, only ever use the hob to occasionally boil water for tea, and don’t need a huge amount of storage since it’s just the two of them.

It’s no longer a family-friendly camper. But I can only imagine that this was a small enough niche that it did not matter.

roof load is increased.. no mention of 'closed'. o_O

The problem with them old retired couples is a lot of them have grandchildren, which they love to have a holiday with once or twice a year (or more likely when the parents can’t get time off work over the summer holidays).

Although I like the look of the new Cali, it’s gone from being a practical and functional vehicle (maximising every inch of space)

For now we will be sticking with the T6.1

Lordy lord!!!
I didn’t notice the lack of an indoor table. Now mine rattles like crazy, but I can live with that as it’s so bloomin useful.

What kind of numbnut designed this thing?

My best guess is since one who enjoys a lot more sunshine hours and centigrades than I do?

The Multivan platform based California now makes the Marco Polo a serious competitor. Make of that statement what you will.

Nope,
I would head straight for the Transit Nugget.

Volkswagen is the most indebted company in the world. I wonder how long they have before its game over.

I think you need to be seriously brave, buying into a Volkswagen at the minute…

I like the Nugget as a camper, but not as a tourer or day tripper. The Nugget kitchen can't be used unless the pop top is opened and the upper bed is in the upright position. No coffee in the morning while the other half is still upstairs in bed. No coffee on the road when you're using the van as an office.

You should consider the City Dreamer. I saw it recently as a 7 seater with kitchen block on the side and double sliding doors on a Ford Transit base. It actually looked quite nice at an affordable price.
