Looking at the available payloads it seems like weight is a problem. It seems that other than an option on the Beach, there’s no spare wheel!

413kg payload for the diesel Ocean. What is it on the equivalent 6.1?
ETA. 509kg on 6.1 Ocean 150
That is about the same difference between a Tx Multivan and a Ax California.A quick comparison shows that the Ocean weighs a hefty 251kg more than the equivalent size 7 seat multivan
There no doubt that this is an interior upgrade but for me its all about storage space. Our 6.1 has just enough cupboard spacefor long treks, the 7 seems to sacrifice too much space for a second sliding door and room for the passenger chair to swivel nicely, neither of which we need.
Always possible VW made a mistake. But I imagine that they looked at the market and saw that people who can afford something like this are by and large whealhty retired couples who only use their van in the summer months, only ever stay at campsites, don’t cook in the van, only ever use the hob to occasionally boil water for tea, and don’t need a huge amount of storage since it’s just the two of them.My wife just sent me this catalogue, and listed out all of the things like this that make it worse than the 6.1 - storage, table, beds, one burner (what’s the point?)… perhaps they imagine there’s a group of people who won’t swap a 6.1 for this, but who have never owned one before? But it all feels like a massive downgrade in practical usability.
(We have a 15 & 12 yo and a small dog, current set up with awning works really well)
The problem with them old retired couples is a lot of them have grandchildren, which they love to have a holiday with once or twice a year (or more likely when the parents can’t get time off work over the summer holidays).Always possible VW made a mistake. It’s no longer a family-friendly camper. But I can only imagine that this was a small enough niche that it did not matter.

The Multivan platform based California now makes the Marco Polo a serious competitor. Make of that statement what you will.
I like the Nugget as a camper, but not as a tourer or day tripper. The Nugget kitchen can't be used unless the pop top is opened and the upper bed is in the upright position. No coffee in the morning while the other half is still upstairs in bed. No coffee on the road when you're using the van as an office.Nope,
I would head straight for the Transit Nugget.
Volkswagen is the most indebted company in the world. I wonder how long they have before its game over.
I think you need to be seriously brave, buying into a Volkswagen at the minute…
