sliding door issue

So here is a strange one, on a recent trip my son could not open the sliding door from inside, I duly checked that the child lock was off and the door would still not open. In the end I had to open the door from outside. When we tried to close the door it would not close as the lock looked locked.

I did a quick check here before I called out the VW assist and found a BASIC SETTINGS to try so I held the door closed as far as it would go and the pressed the lock button on the key and then opened it. This enabled the door to close however it made a horrible noise on closing. After the shock and checking that nothing was not scratched or chipped. I locked the door and went off.

As the noise has stayed I booked the van in to my friendly VW Van cent who have had the van for 3 days and found that the door latch has failed so when the door is closed the latch is not fully opening hence the noise.

Apparently a broken door latch/lock is not covered by the All in One service plan warranty so wonder if anyone has had a similar issue with this lock......

We didn't have the noise you talk about, but was covered under warranty in 2022 on a 2021 Coast

Door latch failure is an MOT failure and is definitely covered under warranty (All in included).
A sliding door that is used. By passengers to enter and Exit the vehicle , is considered a safety feature , failure of any aspect of that safety feature constitutes a safety issue and is an MOT failure, therefore is covered in all Instances of Warranty. (Read the warranty wording , sudden electrical failure or mechanical failure is covered)

There is a known VW TPI for door latch motor , ask your dealer to look it up.
The latch is known to make noise and fail , the TPI is an adjustment.
The latch motor grease dries out and the motor eventually fails due to the additional load of the dehydrated grease.
Door latch failure is a known issue, ask your dealer to justify in writing why they say they will not replace it , I suggest VW is not the issue, the dealer is !

Hi and thanks for the info, the dealer has given me the warranty teams reply. I have had a discussion with the service manager who is going to escalate to the VW warranty team I am awaiting the reply before small claims as I agree with all you have said in the reply

Thanks for the reply, I have the All in service plan through VW and the dealer has sent a claim off to them, they have replied and said it’s not covered as not within the scope of cover. I have told the dealer that this will be taken further as the warranty states mechanical failure and electrical failure are both covered. As the lock/latch is both mechanical and electrical I am surprised they have said no.

So I collected the van today and the Van Centre are still awaiting for the VW warranty team to respond to the escalation of the original decline.

I have paid for the repair £395.00 for a new door lock/latch to be fitted and it is all fixed....the Dealer has agreed to refund me if the warranty team change their mind, But as I have now paid I can also go strait to the small claims court for the amount......So just awaiting the decision now

Oh no I’m getting flashbacks… I’m still waiting for my local dealer to finish the repairs after my lock was replaced. It needs a complete set of panels for the inside of the door that are on order.
Yes they managed to write off all the inside panels as part of the job as well as the exterior damage.

Have you tried contacting VW customer care? I found them very responsive in dealing with VW garages and VW themselves. Might be worth a try.
Also before going to SCC, arm yourslef with the data and then present to VW if there's a TPI for the fault, get hold of it and then discuss with your dealer!

Hi many thanks the TPI is for the latch motor and the grease going hard, also only a mot issue if the door cannot be opened….
