Great day off road driving on Sardinia. There are some epic trails here but thought I would stick to the easier ones to start with, might go for something more taxing tomorrow. 30km through a gorge, with some nice ups and downs. I used the hill descent in anger for the first time and it was very effective. Can’t adjust your speed on the fly like my Landy but very controlled. @Webbah_in_Switzerland the Wildpeaks were flawless especially when I aired down a bit. TBH the terrain was dry with a few patches of deep sand so not a huge test. Did a bit of mild rock crawling and they were solid.

I did, fits a treat. Would have gone for a pair but on the passengers seat when swivelled would be quite tight.

More off road fun in Sardinia, it’s an off road drivers paradise and a good proving ground for how far you can push a 4M Cali. Today’s trail was very easy but with a lot more exposure than previous ones I’ve tried but had some loose sandy sections. Used the Hill Descent a lot for added reassurance on the steep hairpins with crumbly surface, it really works very well indeed - you can control your speed by feathering the accelerator or brake. It will happily crawl at walking pace which would be impossible with the DSG box without it. I now reckon it’s a must have option to look for any potential 4M buyer, on a par with the diff lock imo. Every day I’m surprised by the Cali's capability, I hope I stay the right side of it in the coming days!

We will be back, so much left to explore, but probably do it earlier in the year when it’s not so hot!

A magical blend of mountains, stunning coastline with off road opportunities galore. If anyone wants a destination to test out their ‘swamper’ and still enjoy all the trappings of Italy - food, wine and a slower pace of life you can’t go far wrong.

We will be back, so much left to explore, but probably do it earlier in the year when it’s not so hot!

How are you finding the spots? iOverlander? Going solo without a buddy vehicle to tow you out in a pinch takes big balls in more serious stuff!

iOverlander and Google maps mostly. Park4Night has a useful 4x4 filter too.

If I think something is going to be a bit sketchy I send Ms Slamma ahead on foot to scout the terrain. She’s training for a marathon so she’s mostly willing!

Also we met a Dutch couple in France who had just returned from Sardinia in their old converted Unimog ambulance. They had a map (see link) which detailed a lot of routes and graded them. Whilst definitely more capable than my Cali I think they struggled with height of their truck on a few routes with tree cover.

Have you watched or follow on Instagram any of Travel_Beasts posts? He’s attempting to circumnavigate the Iberian peninsula all off road in his old converted Toyota. He previously did Wales. It’s very extreme, TBH I don’t know how that Toyota is still running!

Does the Joker feel top heavy off road? Getting down to my park up last night was pretty rutted and the van doesn’t have much wheel articulation so I was getting a bit twitchy with the angle at one point. I’d imagine the high top would make that even more nerve wracking!?

Not really. There’s nothing up there. It’s fiberglass and I keep the bedding down lower if going extreme.

My air suspension helps with articulation a bit when using full lift. And I’m always with as much diesel and a full water tank when possible.
