I’ve just been quoted £365.00 plus vat for a dsg gearbox oil change on my 22 plate 204 Ocean with 36k on the clock
Is this a normal price ?
Does it require an oil change?

We had this done about 3 months ago and total cost was 390 euro, which is £ 341,00 approx.

Only at 40000 miles though

2 years or 40,000 miles. Yes.

I was told at the start of the year (at just over 2 years) by the main stealer that only required at 40000 miles (no time limit) so I could wait and it could be done in early 2026, unlike the brake fluid change which was overdue based on time. Can't see anything in any of the documentation I have that states its time based. @WelshGas do you have the documentation as I'll take it up with the dealer when I'm next in? Thanks

Seems dear. I was £281.09 plus vat about 6 weeks ago at VW Sheffield.

I had it done at 4 years, 37,000 miles. At the 3rd annual service at 28,000 miles they told me it could be left until closer to the 40,000.

I’ve done it myself, top of my head the oil was over £100 alone plus a filter. I did it at 40 thou and it is a must that it is changed if not and the gearbox fails it’s very expensive. The company I worked for build a test bed and developed the oil working with VW, the early boxes had a judder the lubricant we developed eliminated the problem.

VW told me the oil needs to be heated to a certain temperature for the procedure, maybe they were trying to justify the cost.

Correct, procedure is to overfill, run the vehicle with the wheels off the floor get the oil to the required temperature then drain out the excess. You do need a VAG Com or the like.

Having read this thread i'm wondering if ours has been changed or not?
Our van was bought new from Breeze Poole and has always been serviced by them. We took out a service plan and our last service was around 45k 4yrs old. I'm surprised Breeze haven't mentioned it if its a service requirement?
Its being 5yr serviced next week and all they mentioned was a brake fluid change, very strange.
Next week could be expensive

Hmm, not too impressed by Breeze. Just called their service department and yes it needs doing. Apparently as last years service was an interim service they aren't obliged to tell me of any other work that's required even though it was overdue.
I know it's up to me to check but how many people are fully aware of whats due and when?
My warranty is up next week too. Luckily the gearbox is fine or they probably would have refused a claim!
Oh and its £368

What on earth? The whole idea of going to a main dealer is that they are supposed to check everything and update you accordingly! What the hell has happened to customer service for them to say 'we're not obliged to tell you'? That's their JOB!

Very much depends upon individuals at most dealerships / garages sadly. Some are superb, going above and beyond. Some just do the bare minimum sadly. Often the same places have both types of people….

I have had exactly the same experience across multiple dealers. I have had to ask for the 4Motion and DSG oils to be changed specifically and have never been prompted. Which is ironic given the long list of things extra service items they try to upsell at every visit (Tyres, Power Steering top up, Air Con re-gas, brake fluid, ad-blu, brake pads) . These magically appear by email as soon they look over the van (or not).

It was also interesting that whilst it was never suggested that I do the DSG nor 4Motion oils. it was the first thing they checked when i applied for the All In Warranty as it is a prerequisite before they will accept it.

Like most life situations, always assume you’re surrounded by/dealing with idiots and, only you can look after your best interests.

I'm coming to the end of the 5yr warranty next week. I was hoping there might be an option to extend it further but now wondering if being 15k over the DSG oil change will affect that.

You could be in luck. There is usually a Black Friday offer on All in plans ( 2 services, 2 Mot’s, 2 year warranty, 2 year Roadside assistance )
Check with your service centre, they should know whether it’s happening this year or not.

I asked about DSG oil change at my local VW dealer only last week. Was told the cost (around £360 from memory) and was also told it should be changed at 45,000. No timescale mentioned. Guess it depends on whom you ask

Every 40,000 miles for as long as I can remember
