We've had our Cali for a few months and just got round to trying out manual and sport modes on the auto gearstick. Shifting across to manual seems seamless (same as my DSG Passat). Shifting back to D (right to left) just leaves the Cali in manual unless I move the stick up or down (out of D then back) then it changes with a bit of a grunt. Is this normal? All changes on the Passat were completely smooth I was expecting the same on the Cali.

You mean that when you’re in Drive, push the gear stick to Manual mode and and then pull the gearstick back to Auto, the gearbox is stuck in manual until you switch to either Neutral, Reverse or Park and then back to Drive?

Something is definitely wrong if that’s the case.

Yes this is what's happening - sounds like a trip to the dealer.

@Marine Boy did you get this resolved as I have the same issue. Many thanks

T5 will most probably be a different gear box to the later models.

There are quite a few auto gearbox variations from t5 through T6.1.
T6 has 7 speed and sports mode, latterly the sport mode was removed from the T6.1.
Gearbox variant is specific to the VIN.
All require oil changes. Some require filter changes (some not)

When was the last oil change carried out on your gear box. (Should be every 40k miles)

Sounds more like a switching issue than actual box issue?

It’s a T6.1 with sport mode, 2020 with 23000 miles on the clock. When I select manual it changes on the dash to M but then won’t let me change up and if I change down then it indicates the lower gear momentarily but stays in the original gear. When I move the selector back over to auto it stays in manual until I pull the lever down and it feels and sounds like the lever finally goes all the way across to auto like it’s about a millimetre or to from where it should have been horizontally

I seem to recall issues reported with failing/failed micro switches under the gear lever boot?
Worth searching on this subject and/or pulling the boot of around the lever and taking a look?

I assume the box behaves when left in auto from the off? If so, this may suggest it’s ok and the problem lies elsewhere?

Scanned for codes?

Scanned and no codes unfortunately

Drive and sport modes all good only manual mode. It feels like something doesn’t quite line up when going back to auto and hence only goes properly back to auto once I pull the lever down. Whether that mechanical misalignment of the lever also prevents proper manual selection or it’s switch related I don’t know I’m afraid and this is one of the closest threads I’ve found on the internet with a similar problem

Thanks for the links. I think my issue is mechanical as I’m not getting any dash errors or Carista codes. Also when I go back to auto mode the selector feels slightly misaligned as it has to ‘crunch’ into selector mode and only works by going into Sport mode as it feels like the gate doesn’t properly engage into drive mode. The ‘crunch’ is the lever thankfully not the gearbox. Hopefully either a bit of debris or the cables need adjusting. Interestingly the part no 7LA713025 started off as as A at the end is now on H so looks like VW have done several modifications!
