I’ve just had my renewal come through for my now 10 years old Ocean. I’ve been with Caravanguard for 2 years and they actually reduced the price a little last year. But this years renewal has a whopping 25% increase. Is this normal level of increase for the industry atm, was my previous cost of £350 abnormally low, or is this the classic behaviour of letting me get complacent with attractive premiums for a couple of years and then overcharging? I think we are relatively low risk , 2 drivers in early 60s, access to another vehicle, rural location, approx 8,000 miles per annum.

Who should I get quotes from? I have previously been with Admiral, CAMC and Comfort. Comfort is no good if they still have the 48 hour rule.

Thanks in advance.

I think motor insurance premiums are down on 2024 but others might disagree.
Our circumstances our virtually as yours albeit with a 2011 van and we paid £300 with LV in December. I know there's some debate about the LV level/extent of cover but we're OK with it

Yes, my premium was down about 10%. I’m already on max NCB as well. That was in November with Safeguard.

I’ve just had our renewal quote from Comfort and it’s down about £20 from last year. We also do around 8k miles, but the price is around what you’ve been quoted for this year. I’d have been over the moon at £350!

Very hard to compare insurance premiums, as there are lots of criteria that can apply.

As far as I am aware, Comfort still have the 48 hour rule, I’ve seen nothing to say otherwise. I’d probably try the insurers you mention. They’re all specialists for motorhomes.

I’ve just run a quote with LV. Not sure if I’ve done the right thing. I clicked a link for motorhome insurance and ran the quote but neither the webpage nor the policy document makes any reference to a campervan. It calls it car insurance. Also the cover for personal belongings is only £300. Have I run the wrong quote? It’s very good value but I’m concerned it’s not really a camper policy.

You have to get approval from the insurer if you leave your van unattended for 48 hours or more in a car park. They check the security provisions at the location. This means that some airport car parks will be ok, but not all. If you’re staying at a hotel, and don’t use the van for over 2 days, but park in the hotel car park, that’s ok, but not if you use an NCP or similar car park.

Better to ring them I think.

The “‘belongings” will likely need to be stored in the boot, not in the living area. It’s a reason we opted for Comfort as they insure a greater value, and include deployed camping gear.

IIRC, I read that Insurance is down 10-15% (based on area) to 2025 prices....

They also have a statement that the insurance is invalidated if a window or the roof is left open. What does that mean for a pop-top?

I guess you insure what concerns you, so if you literally just want motor cover (accidents and theft) then this type of policy is fine. The “fire test” in terms of sources of ignition when camping can be a grey area.
