Okay, I asked because the 7.5J v 8J refers to a wheel width not a tyre width.

so, the standard 235/55/17 Cali tyre has a sidewall ratio of 55% and you asked about a 235/50/17 50% sidewall ratio so if you go for a 235/50/17 your overall tyre diameter and circumference will be smaller, this will result in your vehicle being very slightly lower, the speedo will read higher than you are really travelling, your mpg will drop.

Here are the differences between the standard 55 ratio tyre and the 50;

I've had a search and can't find a tyre with the 50 profile you quote that has a high enough load rating for T5 or T6.
100 being the highest I found.

I'm trying to get close to the VW standard options of 16" 225 60 or 18" 245 45 which both give very similar circumference.

The 235 50 17" comes close but is seemingly non existent.

235 55. 17" comes in slightly over the 1.5% recommended delta from stock.

Ok so I've had a chat with a suspension guru I know.

He put the figures into a spreadsheet and concluded that the 235 55 option
gives a 3.5% reduction in braking force for a given pedal pressure.
4/5 of f*ck all was his opinion.

What may be an issue is that Bosch abs normally has a tolerance of 10mn tyre radius before it flags a fault.

The 235 55 tyre gives a 12mm increase.

Have you considered 225 60 17 103?
1.5% gearing uplift on a 235 50 17.

Think the ABS difference is on left to right wheel difference not on all wheels/tyres being the same.

I know I've only had to reset the warning on my Wife's EOS when tyres changed. About 12mm diameter difference between a new and worn tyre.

Don't think there is a load rated 235/50/17 tyre, probs need to go to the 55 to get 103 rated 17" tyres

What's the criteria with alternative to 235 55 17? Just not clear what reason you want something different.
(Remember you looking at T4 wheels recently) Once that's known I'll try not to give any dumb answers.

I'm changing to a 17" rim and I'm trying to get as close as possible to the original rolling radius given by the option wheel/tyre combos of 225/60/16 and 245/45/18.

The 235/50 gives the closest result but load rated tyres don't exist hence 235/55.

I have been driving myself nuts trying to all terrains and they're just not available in the sizes we need.

However, where do your get 225/60/16 from? the brochure suggests 215/65/16 for 16" wheels and that is within 0.58% of the standard 17's i.e. the same..

• 225/60R16C 102H R/F (676mm)

and the 225/60/16 is within 2% of the current 17s so I would go for 235/55/17 103 XL

An option if still looking. A 104 weight rating. looks a good price option if you have a fitter or the seller may do it.

Had second look & photo of tyres shows 235 55 19 on sidewall??

Hi everyone. I got my Cali a couple of weeks ago now and took some of your advices with going for an 18" TSW bardo wheel to add. . Nice and clean lines. I went for the 255/45 18 tyres but maybe wish I'd gone for the 235/50 which would have filled the arch a bit more. A mate of mine runs a tyre shop so I may be able swap them. Quick question though. Would it really mess with everything in going for say a 235/55 tyre. ???

Increased diameter might foul on the front arches when on full lock. Rear on full bump possibly.
Speedo underread error. ie you'd be travelling faster than indicated.
handling may be more 'wallowy'.
Plus could be that lower air pressure required plus deeper side wall giving smoother ride on UK roads.

Rimstyle recommended 255/45 or 235/50 without any problems. Do you think 235/50 may give a slightly smoother ride and fill the arch a bit more. Thx again.
