2.5 non turbo diesel.. Anygood?

Hi there,

Another question for you guys seen as how last time this forum was so useful. Looking at buy a VW T4 2.5 non turbo diesel now. Is the 2.5 non turbo diesel painful to drive? Not interested in going super fast but would like to feel like I'm moving.

I think the non turbo is 2.4......I thought the 2.5's were all turbo.

I've not experienced one, so will allow others to help, but best be clear which engine we are referring to before the opinions arrive.

I think a guy at work has one without a turbo in his t5, he certainly hasn't complained about it being slow and seems to get decent mpg. I can ask him for more info.

Assuming 2.4 AAB (78hp) or AJA (76hp?).

I wouldn't say it is painful, but it is slow to accelerate and hills can be time consuming. I've spent a lot of time in second gear in mountainous areas. It's got up 1-in-3 gradient hills ok, albeit in 1st gear.

As Mrs 21/35 often comments, "not much traffic on the roads today", but then she doesn't have a rear view mirror

They can be Turbo'd and mechanically enhanced if that is your thing.

Bit noisy, brakes aren't great on earlies (rear drums!). General consensus is that they are reliable and capable of high millage, although I have not found that to be the case with mine. They are mechanically simple, non-electronic and fairly cheap and easy to fix though.

My father in law has a non turbo T4 autosleeper and has just done 300,000 miles with no issues other than regular maintanance.
I wouldn't say it is painful to drive.

1996 2.4d Mine had done 200,000 when i sold it in 2001, a lovely camper and engine

My apologies it is the 2.4 as you've mentioned, yet again some really useful advise on this site. The vans a bit up country so wasn't sure whether it was worth the trip to test drive but now I will.
