5th Seat as an Office Chair...

Afternoon all,

Whilst not really a California purchase, here is something I just purchased to allow me to use my 5th seat from my California as an office chair...





Its basically a chunk of ply with cut outs for the seat feet (and a metal retaining bar) along with 4 casters.

I was originally going to just sell the seat, but wondered how I could make it into a useable office chair or a "sit down and take 5 chair" for the garage, and this fits the bill perfectly.

It is surprisingly sturdy and comfortable.

Looks great and very comfy I bet. I’ve been retro fitting office chair bases onto car seats for a while now and have even sold a few over the years. My trusty Escort RS Turbo seat has been my favorite and has been in my office for a few years now

Your RST office chair looks great - top marks!!

I was hoping to find some sort of kit available to buy online that would basically do what you've done with your RS seat, but whilst I did find a few companies that make kits, none of them would work with the VW Cali seat (they mainly did Audi, BMW...etc), so this was the best I could find.

Should one ever become available, or should you decide to build some and sell them, then put my name down

Talking of RST's and somewhat off topic, I've just said goodbye to my mint S1 a few weeks ago...

Wow nice car. Bet your was sad to see that go. I used to fit a wooden board to bottom of the seats like you have done but now use metal unistrut and make my own brackets to suit any seat and office chair base. I haven’t made one for a few years now though

I agree, its not cheap, but it is purpose built specifically for the VW seat so it is a perfect fit with slots cut for the feet, a retaining latch and decent wheels; if I was just wanting it to use for when the seat was not in the Cali, then I wouldn't have paid this much, but since I never put the seat in the Cali and it's now used daily in an office chair, then I was happy to pay.

Lovely. Bought one back in ‘86. I recall actually getting the turbo unit glowing red hot.
