Don’t want to find out when dash symbol warns ad blue is needed. So how can I check to see level before warning? Can’t find how to check in hand book just how and where to fill it. T6.1 digital dash.

Scroll left/right with right hand multifunction buttons until centre part of digital dash shows Driving Data. Press up/down arrow to select AdBlue range

Thank you very much.

While on the subject ..... How and when one can fill it before car is asking for it? I did some reading about it and am confused.

I am somewhat sceptical if things are as straight forward as in the video. A friend of mine for the last 5 years and a VW mechanic at the largest European VW van Centre (Billie show in Reutte Austria) where I bought the van urges me to not to touch the system or "you will have big problems," even 10 mil overfill can cause expensive problems" he wrote from his vacation in another country. When he gets back I will clarify what he means by his warnings. No, he is not drawing me back to the dealership for a profit. I meet him often socially. That is why I wrote earlier that I am confused. I still have plenty of kms to go on what is left so waiting is not a problem.

Not Bille.... BullieShow. :) (I do not know how to go back and edit). ???

You can top up the adblue whenever you want. I’ve tended to let the range drop to around 8000 to 9000 miles (which is about a years driving for us) and then buy adblue when I see it on offer someplace (like Costco for instance) and fill it up. This gives me around 18000 miles range. I’ve done this twice now and it’s caused no issues. Most of our cars in the previous 10 years have used adblue and we’ve done the same for all.

first time Ad Blue user, my experience: the warning came up add 11-18L Ad Blue, range remaining 1300miles. The Cali Chris video was very informative - thank you.

Van service due in 2 days, but I decided to get it myself rather than incur what might be inflated price at the VW workshop (I may be doing them a disservice, I will ask). Scouted round local filling stations - BP £33/10L container - no pump; ASDA - nothing visible on the forecourt; Sainsbury's nothing visible on forecourt; Shell £40/10L container, no pump on main forecourt but pump in HGV section which I asked about and was able to use - £1.77/L ie £17/10L ( I put in 15 litres). I see a massive range in price for 10L containers online - £10-24 so the Shell pump price is in the middle. Range now showing as 15000 miles. I shall be topping up from time to time when I see pumps from now on.

Many of the commercial diesel stations have Ad Blue 'on tap'. This is the cheapest option and it should be reasonably fresh given the number of diesel HGV's on the roads. The data info screen gives a min and max fill volume. When I need to fill up (I want to run the tank down a fair bit as the urea based AdBlue has a shelf life and I don't want to have a significant proportion of old stuff being diluted with fresh) I'll add the the max suggested and run through the reset protocol. At my current rate of usage I get through a 20L tankful in 3 years.

Things are as straightforward as the video.

Never had a problem in the past with previous VW Group diesels needing AdBlue.

I agree with Corradobrit that it is best to let the tank get low before topping up so that a load of old Adblue isn't left in the tank. Especially with low mileage vehicles where the AdBlue could have been in there for some time.

I let my range get down to 1000 miles, added 10l, followed calibration procedure by turning on ignition but not starting, waited 30 seconds and range updated. 10l look to give me at least a range of 10,000 miles.

First time I topped up from new after 18 months of ownership. Unlikely to need to top up again for at least a year, don’t want too much in the tank, as others have commented can have a limited life expectancy.

How close to its expiration date is it?
I buy mine from Aldi especially because the manufacturing date is usually about a month ago. So at least for Aldi, their stock is usually quite fresh and kept away from sunlight and in the same temperature unlike the forecourts

you can make this difficult or you can make it easy.

A 10l bottle of Adblue isn’t expensive.

When you get the Adblue warning low - you still have over 1200 miles of driving before you run out. That’s at least 2 full diesel tank refills probably three.

When I get the warning - I just by a bottle of Adblue the next time I fill up.

At that point the warning is telling me I can add the whole 10l without worrying I’m over filling.

So I poor that in - means I get a full 10l of fresh Adblue in the tank and the system resets itself.

I then forget about it until I get another warning in about a year from now.

I mean you can sweat the price of Adblue or worry you’ll run out in 2000 miles if you forget to put it in. For the amount of money we are talking about and the amount of warning you have you’re running low I don’t see the point.

I was in Halfords last week and they had a deal on. I see in big supermarkets sometimes- in the foyer such as ASDA and Morrison’s. Worth googling. If you’re a member, Costco is normally good value.

Agree with Skiver. Unless you are planning a massive journey into the back of beyond, wait until the low AdBlue warning appears and then bang in a full 10 litre container of fresh Adblue or use an AdBlue pump at a petrol station that has one..
