Amazing quote

Spare a thought for a Grandad attempting to insure a VW Beetle (51 plate), worth about £500, first car for my 17 year old newly qualified Granddaughter - any suggestions gratefully received?

I'm assuming you have already tried most of the comparison sites as well as a few of the insurers who don't feature on comparison sites.

If you have already done the rounds with the comparison sites, crazy though it may sound, you might have to ditch the Beetle and look at a different vehicle.

When my son was 17 and had just passed his test, the quotes on base model Renault Clio's, Vauxhall Corsas, Ford Fiesta's, etc were all around £1300 to £1400. (This was 4 years ago).

But for the 2006 Mazda 2 he ended up buying, the insurance was £780 with exactly the same mileage and other insurance details. Crazy as the Mazda is 1.5 litre and far better equipped. The insurance was through Admiral with a black box which they subsequently told him he could remove and send back after around 6 months.

Depending on the quotes you have received, it may be cheaper to sell the Beetle, buy a different car and then save on the insurance :Nailbiting

I feel very sorry for youngsters trying to get insurance. We went through it ourselves back in the day but nothing like as bad as it is now.
I get the impression many younger drivers don't even bother getting insurance anymore. Result is everyone ends up paying more. Uninsured/underinsured coverage in the US is an absolute necessity and huge part of the premium.

I used to be a magistrate and the fines handed down for driving without insurance for the young was almost always considerably less than the cost of an annual insurance policy ......

It can help reduce the premium if you include yourself as a named driver on the Policy.

Toyota Aygo 1 litre automatic. First car for my daughter part funded by grandparents, the real new mini, parts cheap, reliable honest transport, cheap to insure, put mum and dad on as named drivers, insured through Aviva online direct, no broker
