There are 2 hydraulic rams on the sides of the manual roof to assist pushing it open. They work in the same way that boot struts do.

And if you want a 4 motion coast, getting liking the comment in the comments section...:thumb

You mean those hydraulic rams that are actually filled with gas, hence the name gas struts?

Don't think you can have both together, if that's what you are saying.
You may not be saying that, and I may be wrong!
Ah yes, you are correct. Screenshot from the VW Germany site.

(Doesn't matter, we have only had our 6.1 Ocean 12 weeks! Not waiting another 11 months for VW to sort their lives out!!!).

All gas struts have oil in, the gas is the spring and the oil does the damping, otherwise it would be like a trebuchet

Try to push a gas strut inwards, if you can (by hand).
Put your van with the back in the sun. Get out all the chairs and linings. Remove the bike rack (if fitted). Open the bootlid and just let it go.

What damping?

The oil is for lubricating the seals where the piston slides through.

Take out the gas struts and try to open your bootlid. The damping is just through the weight of what the gas strut needs to open.
