Hi all, I purchased an Atera Strada EVO 2 to fit on my VW California T6.1, equipped with a Westfalia detachable towbar. Unfortunately the rack does not slide back far enough for the tailgate to open. Atera is telling me they designed a special version, being the Atera Strada EVO RV for this purpose. I seem only to be able to order it from Germany so can not test it first. Is there anyone with experience with this model that can assure me it slides back far enough?

I have the Atera Strada DL3 and it slides just far enough back for the tailgate to open but it's a question of millimeters. My long handlebar normal MTB won't fit on the inside rail without turning the handlebar and it turns out that my new e-mtb is too long for the rail. In short, you're right to want to test it before buying it.
For myself, I'm thinking of getting the Thule EasyFold XT.

Thanks, nice to know. Are you sure the Thule EasyFold XT does the trick? It does seem to be foldable enough to fit in the trunk at least.

No, I'm not sure and the price is eye watering so I'm not going to jump into it. It does seem to have a better load capacity than mine and the rail seems to be longer so my eMTB will probably fit. I'll probably take my smaller MTB on my next trip in June so I'm not under any pressure to change although being able to fold it for the trunk might tip the balance in favour.

Clear, I see on the video that you still have to modify the Thule Easyfold for it to rotate further, by taking away the stops. That's what I actually had already with my old Thule rack. You can open the tailgate fine, but the bikes are laying in the dirt, which I wanted to avoid with the sliding Atera.

I find the modified Easyfold (with stops trimmed on a bandsaw and replaced) good because a bike handle hits the ground. By laying them flat it is easier to access the boot area, and I keep a small pad on hand for the handlebar end.

I did once drive off a few yards however, forgetting the bike was down and chose to replace the endcap to help forget my senior moment.

I have the Atera Evo RV and can confirm that it does slide enough to open the tailgate however I do have to rotate the handlebars on the innermost bike.

I have the Atera Genio Pro and can open the tail gate.

I have a EUFAB Premium II Plus - Bike Rack on my T5. Works without any modification.

I have the factory fitted detachable tower on my 6.1 and the Alera Genio Pro for 2 bikes and it works well, I can open it with 2 heavy e-bikes on it and the handlebars don't touch the ground and the tailgate clears it fine.

Hi, this looks like an interesting alternative, as you can easily store it in the van, when not in use. Did you have to do any modification to it to get there?

And one more question, if I may: Does the tailgate open also easily when no bikes are attached? in other words, is it the weight of the bikes that tillt it further?
