We normally go to Spain and Portugal in September/ October. This avoids school holidays and also means that there is no need to book sites.

How busy are campsites in France in August pls ? Do folk book in advance or is it safe to just roll up ?

Thank you

It all depends on what you want, if you want a certain site or to stay for some time in a certain area, I would book, on the other hand if you intend to move about and go where the wind takes you, freewheel, that’s what we do, if a site is full, there is always another near by

First half of August is hell; after that it gets easier. In high season (July/mid August) they sometimes require you to stay at least one week. If you stay away from the coast you may have the best chance of finding a site.

If you're looking for big, populair sites with many facilities, you'll have a hard time, but if you're looking for smaller, simpler campings and don't mind finding one or two fully booked and having to try the next one, you'll be just fine. Have been camping in France all my life and have never booked a camping in advance.
