My battery needs replacing, it is five-and-half years old and isn't holding the charge very well.

I went to a website and found the same battery as the one I have in the van but they say it is not suitable for my vehicle.

What do people thingk?

Mine is a:
Yuasa YBX5110
YBX5000
12v
85Ah
800A.

If I change my battery will I have to reset the radion, control panel et al?

Thank you

I bought a Yuasa YBX5019 12v 100Ah SMF for my 5.1. Works perfectly. I did recode via Carista.

I did recode via Carista.

What and how is this?

This is my thread on replacing the battery.

This should explain things:

If anyone searches in the future…here’s what to do.

Buy a Carista - just the basic £30 one is fine.
I needed to remove the battery insulation as the new battery is significantly wider.

Remove neg terminal first. Then positive.
Replace battery and positive first then negative back on.

Plug jn carista and turn ignition on. Ignore all the warning lights. Run a diagnostic and clear the error codes. Go to servicing and battery and simply add the new capacity and serial number and you’re good to go.

You do need to buy a carista subscription but can either cancel within 2 weeks or keep it and continue playing. I’m going to have a longer play tomorrow and change some settings and then decide whether to keep it or not.

I have bought the battery £106.00 free delivery. Arrives in 3 days.

I will fit new battery and take it from there. One of my son's is a mechanic and we have a couple of OBDs so we may be able to figure out what's what.

Tbh I just took mine for a 30 minute spin and it resets itself.
There’s lots of differing opinions on recoding.
From my research, using a higher capacity battery means a recode is necessary.

As an aside, I just noticed Carista are doing a special offer on the Carista EVO with a 12 month subscription pack for £75.99.

No idea if it is regularly discounted to this price, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Worth giving it a go.

The battery is arriving tomorrow. I will fit it and see what hapopens. It is booked into a VW garage on Friday for something else. If it needs re-coding they may do it then.

Thanks

I did read that the van will self program the new battery after a short period of time and that the coding is 'mainly' to enable VW to see when the battery was installed for any warranty issues down the line. Note I'm not saying this is fact.

I did use Carista on my replacement, just set correct Ahr rating and changed the serial number by one digit. The van did show one error relating to overcharging once afterwards (only showed when looking up errors on Carista, nothing on dash) but no problems otherwise.

Warranty is not something I worry about being that the van is 12 years' old.

I was referring to warranty if VW fitted the replacement battery at any time there would be a date reference for checking on the vehicle.

Different Capacity or change of type (Flooded vs AGM) then for optimal performance then you should recode, like for like it will sort itself out quickly without a re-code/reset.

I have a T6.1 from 2000. Last August whilst rakin about the Scottish Highlands the main battery failed. Had to call out the AA who, bless them arrived within an hour and started the van. I had already arranged a replacement battery from a depot near where I was based but could have bought a new battery from the AA. I didn’t know this was possible. Price wise the two were the same.

My 2011 SE also had a yuasa ybx5110. A local Seat garage looks after my California and they fitted a yuasa ybx5115 for £100.

I'm a bit late to the party on this thread. I've recently changed the starter battery on my t5.1 to a Bosch S5; slightly higher capacity to the S4 it replaced. To prevent any code problems, I connected my Nocco battery bank/charger to the terminals, switched it on so there was a constant supply of electricity to the system, then disconnected the battery and removed it. Replacement was the procedure in reverse. No coding issues.

Coding of batteries was introduced on T6 onwards due to the Smart charging alternator, start stop , emissions debacle etc.

T5.1 with the BlueMotion Option.

Mine failed in the middle of the Scottish Highlands, so God bless the AA! There were no dramas when I had the new one fitted. My advice is don’t wait till it fails.

T5.1 with the BlueMotion Option.
Don't know if the Battery needed coding on 5.1 blue motion ?

I don't think it was introduced until T6

Edit: looks like VCDS did have the ability to code T5.1 starter Bat , I stand Corrected. Not sure many were coded

T5.1 - our old 2012 Beach was ‘blue motion’ but that referred to tyres, gear ratio & gear change selector guide shown on dash ( No start / stop.)

AA said no coding required when they changed battery, but advised if start/ stop then it’s recommended.

Yes my 5:1 with BMT and stop start required coding when I fitted a new battery.
Moreso for mine as I fitted a higher capacity battery.
