Bed stuck down!

Update; The backrest is now in upright position again. I managed to get a grip on the loose wire with a flat iron. Now I need to remove the back trim to to get the cable back in position. I afraid I might have to replace the release handle and even the wire, or both left and right wire. Any advice how to remove the trim? Spare parts? I haven’t found the backseat in any of the spare part webb sites.
Exactly what year is your vehicle?

from an earlier post - 2005.
Thought so, so parts are going to have to be searched for. Probably not easily available from usual sources.

The schematics are without the daybed backrest but I found it here.

Absolutely. There where two, now I’m certain which one. I found a Swiss website selling an aluminum version of the rake adjuster handle (no26). Very expensive. I would guess it’s the upper bowden cable (no11) I need to replace

I had to replace the plastic back plate on mine. Different model, but remove all visible screws. Use plastic trim tools to ease the panel around the edge and some significant force. I would get some replacement plastic fastners as they tend to break. Take your time.

Thanks. I have now managed to remove the upper part of the back panel trim and also the rake handle to confirm the upper bowden wire is cut off where it is connected to the handle ( se pic). The remains of the wire easily removable. To be able to unhinge the wire I need to remove more of the trim but there are 3 clips behind the pocket and in the bottom (not necessary to remove) that’s really stuck (se last pic). Any tricks before I break the panel in pieces?

You have to unscrew, easier said than done, that central section. The correct sized bit, or an Allen key, heated up and pushed in to melt the plastic. I’ve used that technique in the past on something similar.
Other than that, a trim tool to tease it out or a screw driver with tape around all but the end of the blade to avoid damage to surrounding trim.

After 2005 they changed the mechanism, mine is a 2006 and
to lower the bed I have a release strap which is between the base and the
back of the seat.
I'm sure it is the same function, just that yours has longer wires that extend up
the seat back.
It could be worth investigating if you could 'sort of' upgrade yours to the newer
system ?
Probably worth looking into.

Ah, thanks, so they can be unscrewed! I will give that a try tomorrow with a heated torx bit. I have a trim tool set.
It seem the bowden cable is out of production. That gives me another problem. Maybe @westfalia below has an idea.

Thanks. The cable system has two parts, one upper (bowden cable) and one lower cable. If the lower is a generic construction maybe it’s doable. The upper bowden cable seem to be out of production, no where to find.

I'm sure the seat/bed is the same, we just need a parts diagram
from about 2007 onwards.

Hopefully you can then adapt the lower cables, connect them to a strap and glue the
old release back in place.

But it is such a simple construction. If I could just find any cable with a bowden end (bike cables?) and just tie it to the mechanism, that would probably work.

It seem the LLL parts have the cable in stock but the site won’t accept my registration.

Is this any use?

Surely the cables aren't hard to come by.

Maybe not, but thanks. The end that goes into the release handle can be seen in the pic in my earlier post.

I managed to register an account at LLL Parts UK and I made a request if the cable will be back in stock again. I can always buy a complete new backrest for 780€ (in stock) or just the cable for 28 .

Ahh, I see.
Well good luck with the 28€ cable. :thumb

My rear seat has just been stuck in the down "bed" position and I was trying frantically to pull the centre strap and raise the seat back, but to no avail. The strap was trying to release the catches, but was only moving slightly and not enough to release the mechanism.
My solution was to put all my weight on the seat back and pull the strap, keep tension on the strap and then pull the seat back up into normal position.
This isn't a permanent fix and certainly needs looking into, to see why the strap isn't able to operate the release mechanism properly.

I had this once and it was due to something in the boot pressing hard against the seat back when it was folded down.
