Best toll tag for France, Switzerland, Italy.

The number plate info isn't used for France or Spain, I thought that in Portugal all hire cars were already registered , I'm sure it said in my tag instruction specifically not to use it in a hire car. I don't know about Italy.

Copy & paste from Emovis tag website re Portugal:

Hiring a Car in Portugal? Important information

Emovis Tag customers shouldn’t use their Emovis VIA-T tags in a Portuguese hire car. This is because most hire cars are already registered with Via Verde thus enabling transactions to be allocated to the hire car companies Via Verde account. When this occurs the Hire Car Company will charge an administration fee to provide your details to the authority/toll road operator.

However there is a solution if you are traveling to the Algarve....

All you need to do is check for outstanding tolls recorded against your hire cars license plate. All you need is your hire car's licence plate and to wait for 2 days after using the road, then input the hire cars registration number (remember the "-") into either the CTT website / App or Via Livre website.. You can then pay for any outstanding transactions made on the A22 or A28 here on the Via Livre website. If you're planning to hire a car in Portugal, try Rhino Car Hire
Or try: http://paa-rent.pt/

I need to clarify, the mention of Rhino rentals was not a recommendation from me, that’s a cut & paste from the Emovis website re using tags in. Portugal.
Ahh, I did wonder.

I wouldn’t dream of hiring a car in Portugal - I’d take the Cali! It’s why we went back to an Ocean for the cross continent high speed travel.

I personally use Ulys similar to bip and go. Since I only pay for the month I use it. 2.3 euros per month
And if that month, I also used Blablacar carpool services, It is free for that month, and I just pay the toll on it.

I will highly recommend having a tag, as this allows you to go through without stopping, and also since usually there are no queues on the dedicated lanes.

I have one 1 tag I move between vehicules.

And No set up fees for Ulys. And sorry 2 euros/ month used. So max 4 euros over the summer :)

When setting up your credit card with Fulli, do you get the choice of paying in Euros or GBP?
Thanks.
Well, unless they have changed terms since I set things up last year, credit cards are not accepted, full stop (they were some years ago but then that was ceased). You need to use a debit card/account that accepts SEPA direct debits. I explain this some detail in my posts above, including how to check if an account accepts SEPA.

If you want a quick solution, open a Starling account, use that IBAN to sign up to Fulli, make sure that account has sufficient funds and off you go.

I keep a Sterling card purely for this now, plus, other motoring expenses UK and abroad.

EU charges are automatically converted by Starling (at competitive rates, too). An alternative is a Revolut Card, but for that you need to move sufficient funds across to Euros (again see above for more detail).

Thanks for the information. This is where I’m getting a bit confused as @Alied posted a screenshot showing the ability to pay by credit card. I will re-read the thread:)

I really wanted credit card charging and tried Mango/Fulli several times without success. It was a painful time consuming learning curve finding a bank to do SEPA direct debits, most high Street ones won't; plus I don't like direct debits on my main bank account anyway (particularly international direct debits) as the onus is on you if/when things go wrong, unlike credit cards where the onus is on the bank.

But a dedicated Starling debit card with only sufficient funds to meet known liabilities is just fine with me.

@Kayleigh sorry for the confusion. Just to clarify the situation I have an account with Fulli in which I pay my toll charges with a credit card. This is because I have a legacy account with them since 2018 when it was originally called APRR then it changed to Mango mobilités and now it is called Fulli. As @Viktorgeorge has stated Fulli do not now accept a credit card as payment for new customers only a direct debit with a SEPA account.

Thanks @Viktorgeorge and @Alied for your responses.
I think I will stick to the old fashioned way and pay by credit card at the pay booths. I really don’t want to set up any direct debit for this.

Your call, of course, and I too was in that camp initially - but I have to say that the Starling route has worked a treat for me, once I set it up.

ATMB allow CC charging. Very straightforward to set up and use, billed monthly in euro so works really well with ie. Halifax Clarity card. It was free tag delivery and no monthly fees for a while when I set up earlier this year, not sure if still current - link here:

This worked fine for me recently. No queue's whatsoever. Maybe a different story in August but I tend to avoid traveling during peak holiday time.

Has anything changed on these since the last posts here?

is Fulli still the best choice?

I’ve seen Bip & Go and Ulys but Ulys has run out of Italy badges for 4-5 months now and Bip & Go stopped doing the discounted rate I was on so looking elsewhere now.

I see there are Spanish and Italian providers As well now like bip&drive and Pagatelia anyone used them?

any other contenders?

As I understand it there's currently;

UK: (a lot more expensive for some reason)
Emovis: https://www.emovis-tag.co.uk/

France:
Fulli: https://www.fulli.com/en/electronic-toll-badge
Ulys: https://ulys.vinci-autoroutes.com/en/
Bip&Go: https://www.bipandgo.com/en/
ATMB: (France only) https://www.atmb.com/telepeage-tarifs/nos_abonnements_telepeage_atmb/

Spain: (VIA-T issued tags seem to attract discounts on Spanish motorways but not French ones)
Pagatelia: https://www.pagatelia.com/en/
Bip&Drive (Spanish Residents only): https://www.bipdrive.com/en/

Germany: (both quite expensive)
Tolltickets: https://tolltickets.com/en/
Tollbird: https://www.tollbird.com/en

Italy:
Telepass: https://www.telepass.com/en/consumer/offers/go-by-telepass/

Also out of Fulli, Ulys and Bip&Go - Fulli are the only ones that have decent customer service (that I've personally experienced) if that's important to anyone.

Bip&Go took weeks to respond to me and Ulys don't seem to be able to do anything other than send out template emails every few days without responding to the question you asked.

Haven't spoke to anyone else on the list though so maybe the others are better or worse.

Having not used the Autoroutes before (but will be this year), is it really that much faff paying contactless card at each toll booth?

Not a faff paying, but a busy times the queues can be slow. The queues at gates for transponders are much quicker.

After two 20 day visits to France last year and many km's spent on the Peage I would say no. Now if I was using them in late July and August I would probably get one to avoid lines. Or if i was solo driving in a RHD vehicle, the Telepass system is ideal.

Plus if you have nothing on your roof you can use the 30 km/h lane although some fast lanes don’t have a height restriction barrier.

Not a faff ,

July / August there can be a couple of cars in front of you, but i have never had to queue for more than a few minutes in peak times, it’s not like the M25 !
Calais to Lyon last year Early August, no discernible queue, even close to Lyon.
if you’re paying with a card such as Starling etc it’s really easy, contactless, great exchange rate, transactions notified to your phone in real time, no card charges, no initial / monthly / ongoing fees from the tag co, no returning spent units etc etc.
Horses for courses.
