"Bike Porn"-your rides and how/where you use them

Thought I would post a picture of my pride and joy and add to this boring thread ;-) though it is not quite in the league of many I have seen on the forum. I built it based on using wheels, stem, handle bars and brakes off my old Ridgeback hard tail and new full sus carbon frame, XT drive train and Rockshox Reba shocks. Plenty of upgrades still to go over the coming months.

Why takes this route? Well... Come my birthday last Sept my wife said why not get that new bike you keep talking about, then we realised my budget was a grand more than hers! So this was my compromise [SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]. Can't tell you how much I enjoyed spec'ing and building it though, almost as much as riding it.

What frame is that? Looks a nice bike,as always once we start specing things up it becomes never ending....though it looked like a gt but not sure.

It is a Titus X Carbon from On One. Planet X were selling these which is where I bought it from.

Had various saddles on test over the past month mainly Fiziks and some bontragers ...finally went for the Bontrager trek Team issue saddle suits the bike and tie's in my kit ,as well as being comfy on short & long haul :thumb

anyone else got any new kit for 2014 :?: :?: :?:

Re: "Bike Porn"-your rides and how/where you use them

Looking at some Ergon GP3 grips to help the blood flow in my hands and wrists, I don't have to go far before I start getting numbness! Anyone had experience of hand grips and reducing numbness, pins and needles and the like?

i would be quite interested in these or others like them barryjm ,as i do and always suffered with the same problems ...

I've not had the problem on bicycles but I had huge issues on enduro motorcycles. I blamed vibration for years but eventually discovered that for me, the height of the bars made a huge difference the bend in the wrist being crucial - the straighter the better.

Quite common as you put pressure on the radial ulnar nerve when you ride.
Specialized Body Geometry gloves help a lot.

I use cane creek ergo grip II bar ends on my flat bar bike, they're really comfy allowing varied positions but not sure they'd be cool enough for any of the fancy bikes I've seen posted on here

As for the ' where we ride our bikes bit' nowhere at the moment, I'm thinking maybe canoeing could be more suitable given the recent rain, rain and more rain!

I used to get numb hands a bit and then it started to get worse so bought some new gloves which helped a lot and virtually stopped it occurring again. Also had some Fizik padding underneath the bar tape on the Time bike which has helped a lot.

cheers

See if i can get some shoes & pedals if anyone doing any deals :thumb

Might look for some new leggings to replace the pair I put a hole in last week after a tarmac & body interface moment :doh but main purpose of going to the show is to drool over new kit. Also one of the guys I ride with is considering a Canyon 29er and this should be a good opportunity to see whats its like 'in the metal' rather than online. Hopefully try out some for size as well.

There are a number of things you can do for hand numbness, as peeps have said, Specialized BG gloves are great but any with the extra padded area on the 'heel' of your hand do the job too I think (I use Spesh BG myself, have a winter pair and a summer pair). Also, thicker grips can help as you don't need to close as tight a fist if you have large hands/long fingers. Then there is reach/position, changing the length of the stem or the rise/height of the bars can help, this will also affect how the bike handles though, so gloves and grips are probably first and safest to change and try.

My wife has ergonomic grips with the flared section for the heel of the hand, I guess it stops your hand dropping behind the bar and making the wrist angle more acute.

Also worth looking at your gear shifter and brake lever positioning on a flat bar bike as if your brake levers come off the bar straight out in front, perpendicular to the ground, that will add to discomfort and force that acute wrist angle. the levers should point diagonally down toward the ground under where your fingers would naturally rest if you had your hands on the grips with as straight a line as possible from the top of your forearm to top of your hand.

:)

Interesting comments on the hand numbness issue. I decided to purchase the grips and have fitted them but the incessant rain has stopped me testing them yet.

Have a Specialized Camber Comp (29er), and a Scott Genius MC40 (with lots of upgrades) in my stable. Lots of local forest trails to keep my old legs turning. :D

The wife has Specialized Myka 29er, a Rockhopper and a Specialized road bike to keep herself fit. Sold the official VW bike rack as it was a pain to load bikes on to, and now use a Thule towball mounted one. :clap

Ah but we could organise something...lol

What do people use to lock their pride and joy to their bike racks??

We've a VW Rack and makes me a little nervous to leave our bikes on back???

Cheers

I use a long cable and padlock, windsurf shops sell them to lock up boards. Either wind round the bike rack or more securely to the towing eye under the bumper.
As long as its not a muddy mtb I quite often put the bike inside now. With the Beach a bike can sit on top of the multiflex board. You do need to move the seat forward a few stops to get extra space. Front wheel needs to come off but I can get even a long TT bike there.
Where do you do your weekend rides Shaun? We've got some regular routes that are out to Fordingbridge / Ringwood area. Usually involving a coffee stop in Hyde :D I'm imagining the fords down there have quite a bit of water in them at the moment though.
