Built without parking sensors

It seems that my Cali has been built without parking sensors even though they are clearly quoted on the order form / quotation - so I have paid for them. I have the camera but need front sensors as I need to park the vehicle within a couple of inches of the wall of my house.

I believe the error was the dealer's. They ordered 7X9 which is described as "Rear-view camera". I questioned this at the time and was 'assured' that the code was correct for camera plus sensors. It now appears that this is not the case - (I should have checked here on the forum)!

I'm not sure what to do. I do not really want to reject it and end up at the back of a 6+ month waiting list again. But this matters to me. So I have two questions.

1) is it possible / realistic for the dealer to retro-fit the OEM sensors and have them fully integrated with the vehicle display (just like they had been fitted in the factory)?

2) how much compensation should I seek if a) they can do an OEM retrofit or b) I have to end up making do with an inferior aftermarket solution?

All advice welcome.

Parking sensors and privacy glass are the big MUST HAVES in speccing a van, especially for resale. Retro fit parking sensors are ugly and do not work anywhere near as good. (The wife had some fitted to her Golf)

I would be asking for new bumpers from the factory rather than retrofit or else reject it

Thanks. My preferred option would be that it is sorted by VW so I don't have any warranty issues. If I have to go down this route I'll be looking for significant compensation to cover both the cost of this and the additional warranty risk I would be taking.

My start of negotiation, would be to reject the van and then ask for a loan van while you wait for the correct van to be built.

That way you don't lose the camper van experience over the summer, you can also make all of your mistakes on a loan van and then have a nice new one at the end of the summer.

You will have 6 months depreciation free motoring.

You might even get "your" van as a loan vehicle.

If not like you say you would want £1000 to cover the cost of the retrofit, plus compensation for the hassle.

Name and shame the dealer @DM on this forum if they don't sort it for you so other don't have to suffer. Sorry to hear about this. It's very frustrating :(

Frustrating indeed @Aidy P ? I certainly will name the dealer soon. Either with a commendation for sorting it out entirely to my satisfaction or as a warning to others. I'll give them a couple of days to respond first.

These people list the OEM ones integrated into the head display as well.
http://oemretrofits.co.uk/parking-sensors.shtm Did you want front and rear or just rear? Fronts will also involve a button on the dashboard turn them on or off. That's on the T5 at least, assuming that the T6 will be the same.

I really need the fronts because I have to park so close to a wall at home.

Hazzydayz do that as well, retaining the VW full warranty.

Thanks - I'll look at both these if I have to.

Both claim to use OEM parts and maintain the full OEM look and functionality. But surely VW would not have anything to do with them from a warranty perspective.

From Hazzydayz.

All work provided by us comes with a 2 year guarantee. All parts we use and offer on our website are either brand new or refurbished and come with a 2 year parts warranty. All new parts are also covered by the Volkswagen & Audi 2 year parts warranty. All aftermarket products come with a 12 month warranty.
On New cars we will match the manufactures 3 year warranty.

All Genuine Vw/Audi Retrofit Installations will not invalidate your vehicle warranty. We recommend you inform your dealership of any work carried out by us prior to any warranty claim. You may also want to inform us via phone or email. Please produce your invoice from us. This will help with any diagnostics which need to be carried out. We are also happy to speak with your Audi service adviser or technician if required.

Thanks. Really helpful. If I am forced down this route then my preference will be to either get the dealer to contract the work directly or to get them to inspect it afterwards to confirm that it will not invalidate the VW warranty.

At least you have a starting point for compensation.:thumb

Seems WG has hit it on the button. Either get VW dealer to retrofit OR Hazzydaz as with either your OK.

The dealer should pay either way although they must be given the option of who actually fits as they are footing the bill. Apart from that I can't see compensation is due as long as they correct things. Sounds like it was a simple error. You will have lost nothing.

By all means name the dealer but 'shaming' is not the way forward if they are willing to correct the situation 100%

Be assured I will not shame the dealer if they rectify things to my full satisfaction. Rather I will applaud them.

However - I suspect that my Cali will forever show on VW's systems as NOT being fitted with parking sensors. That will potentially cause warranty issues in the future (and I have purchased a 5 year warranty) if I need to get warranty work done at any other dealer. So, even if I end up with a working parking sensor system, I am still not getting what I have paid for which is the ability to have any issue (including parking sensors) fixed at any VW dealer for a period of 5 years.

A friend of mine had a 6 months wait for a Range Rover only to find they had delivered a 5 seater when she had ordered a 7 seater. She took it as she had sold her other vehicle, but told them to order the correct one in the meantime and then swapped back 6 months later. Stand by your contract and make them honour it...

If you do end up accepting the current vehicle I would push very hard to have the dealer do the retrofit and get it in writing that it is still covered under your warranty...

Good luck

Hi, I recently had a very similar experience, my Ocean was built without a multifunction steering wheel clearly listed on the options list, with help from my dealer VW admitted responsibility, I rejected the vehicle (originally due for delivery March 1st) a new order was submitted, I was given a loan vehicle until my new one arrives in June maybe, and a financial contribution which I used to upgrade my original order.
So stick to your guns, it's not what you ordered and you'll regret settling for less.
Hope it works out for you as well as mine did.

Glad yours got sorted Trevor. Was your s a VW error? Pretty sure mine is dealer error so it'll be interesting to see if they put their hands up as quickly. I'm sure my case is solid though as the order form clearly includes parking sensors with the itemised price!

Hi again
yes, mine was a proven VW issue as they changed the content of the options pack without informing the dealers and built the van to the new spec minus the wheel option.
As you said though you have a strong case as you have a copy of the otions ordered so keep going.

The various option packs are a mystery. Why can't VW be more transparent as to what is included? There are various threads on here with people asking what's included in this or that pack. It's no wonder dealers and customers are caught out.
Perhaps VW should sort out a UK version of the Konfigurator.
Meanwhile, I hope you sort out your parking sensors.
This thread caused me to check my order confirmation just to be sure if specified the front & rear sensors + camera option - confirmed (£510+VAT).

It's not what you ordered but what's in The build spec that matters. Have you seen a copy of that! Does it have sensors AND camera? It seems that there is a combined option (camera + sensors) for pricing purposes but for the build spec they have to be selected separately.

No I haven't seen the build spec, only the vehicle order form. Perhaps something for me to chase up. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks to all for your helpful and supportive posts.

I've had an update from the dealer today. Not an apology exactly but they have 'offered' to get a third party specialist to retro-fit the OEM VW ParkPilot front and rear sensors at their cost. I'm happy enough with this as long as it is the same as the factory fit system. So I've requested a written response to some very specific questions to ensure that I get the genuine factory experience.

They were completely unable to answer my questions about the warranty position on the retro-fitted system. I'm not sure that "I've never known one fail" really cuts it as I would have had a full 5 year VW warranty on it if fitted in the factory. I'm awaiting the written reponse on that as well.

If (and only if) they satisfy me regarding both these aspects then I will accept that solution as the thought of 'undoing' insurance, finance, service plan, gap insurance, extended warranty etc and waiting 6 months for a replacement does not particularly appeal.

Before accepting it might be worth popping the written word via Citizen's Advice just to make sure it is binding...

If their proposal doesn't work for you, I would still be of the opinion you should be able keep this vehicle until new one arrives...
